We just don't know until we see these guys play a few games whether they're going to be able to penetrate and disrupt the passer. What they did or didn't do in college may well be a product of the system they played in and the coaching they got.

I don't have as much concern over lack of pass rush moves early as I do he's giving up on plays. Not a good look for a high 2nd rounder

The same is true the other way too. We've all seen people dominate in college under a system that favors them and disappear in the NFL.
We just have to wait and see what comes of it.

"Alfred Collins not only was a second round pick, he was a high second round pick and he's behind Mykel Williams and CJ West. He's even behind Sebastian Valdez, who's a undrafted guy…
He's behind and he looks behind (due to missing minicamp). I… pic.twitter.com/7S4Vrw69mP
I'm not surprised he's not having a good camp. Missing OTAs is a massive deal as a rookie. He's trying to soak up a new coach, new scheme, build chemistry with new teammates, apply new techniques, learn new assignments and different methods of defending runs, etc. It's a lot to try to soak up. Things on the field are happening fast, and he's probably overthinking everything right now.
Pretry much on brand for how things have unfolded. The fortunate thing is between West, Anderson, Williams, Bosa, and possibly YGM, we have some guys that can fix our run D issues. I think in a few weeks (essentially the start of the season) he should be in a place where he's caught up and can contribute. Therein the danger lies with trying to get every dollar. Not saying he shouldn't have, but looking at the opportunity cost.

As long as he doesn't get injured, he's going to be a solid contributor.
I don't think he'll get more playing time than Anderson and West, that could change later in the season, especially if he catches on fast.

Before givens was injured Anderson was more on the bubble with Valdez' camp performance with a technique that was more needed. Now new pickup Hector is Givens obvious replacement for now.
West, Collins, Valdez, Anderson, Davis/Hector ... if Givens goes on IR. That group has 1 "veteran". Yikes.

We all knew he'd be solid as a run defender. The issue is learning to pass rush essentially for the first time in his career. I heard someone saying he was quicker than expected, but he came in behind so he needs one on one and classroom coaching right now to even be able to practice with the team in some parts of practice.

Collins was drafted to be a run stuffer and open up space for others including the linebackers. If people are expecting to see pass rushing from him in year 1 are going to be very disappointed. That's not his skillset(Atleast year 1). His job to take on double teams, stuff the run, and allow the others on the Dline and Linebackers to benefit from it.

There's no shame in that. A couple pages back it was posted that 4-5 DL that were primarily run stuffers in college that got drafted in the 2nd round last several years.
The key is that he has to be good at least in that aspect. If he turns into a career 2-4 sack guy per year, but is constantly graded in the top 5-10 against the run, it's a solid pick.

He's supposed to be a huge gap plugger and run stuffer. So I wouldn't worry that they are saying he isn't as explosive off the ball as CJ West. That's West's game. Collins is supposed to be a huge space eater and he will be that. He will be fine. Even really good.

Funny thing is I think they were thinking West was going to be more of the space eater, immovable object to keep LBs clean than Collins. And that may be how they end up, but right now West is looking more sudden than expected.
But you are absolutely right in that West and Collins are world class run defenders and that is the main thing the 49ers needed ... in a HUGE way.

He tests really sudden. I think it's expected. Look at his workout numbers. Great for his size.
