49ers sign QB Mac Jones

There are already a couple of the top QB prospects that have said they aren't enterng the draft. They've opted to take the NIL money. This may become more common so there will be fewer QB propects in some drafts. That makes a guy like Jones more likely to see interest from teams looking for a QB. His experience can offset the lack of athleticism and makes him a better choice to start immediately.

Losing Saleh aside, I think we could live with this honestly.

At some point, the brain drain needs to slow down.

I would think Mac would make much more sense to teams like the Steelers or the Vikings.

There is absolutely zero chance the Vikings would take Mac Jones for 2026. JJ may not be the answer, but they wont come to that conclusion yet.

there are some teams that are desperate for a QB AND the guys coming out of college are very meh. If the 49ers play their cards right we may be able to take advantage of a team like the Vikings who are floundering without a competent Qb.
I've seen 2nd round pick in some articles. I'd gladly take a 3rd and 4th round picks.
The Niners know they'd probably get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick later down the road if they kept him. That should be the starting negotiating point for the opposing team. They should ask for a 1st round pick, get laughed at and then counter with a 2nd round pick. Maybe meet in the middle and get a 3rd rd pick.
Trade him for a 3rd? Seriously? How are you going to feel then if Brock goes down? Look at the qb-hungry teams and then look at their options. A 3rd doesn't even start the negotiations. Bottom line is, we don't have to trade him. We don't want to trade him. And how many starting-quality qb's are going to be available next year? A player is worth whatever teams will pay for him and a 1st is not an impossible target with the way things are. I would prefer we kept him, but if he is desperate to find his team of the future, we need to get paid for the risk we will then be taking.
Exactly. If Brock goes down again, Mac Jones will be worth more than a first to us.
And if he plays well and wins a bunch of games for another team then he's worth more than a first to that team too. See Darnold
If we have to give some team a starting QB on a 5M a year contract then at minimum we need a blue chipper in return. Otherwise Kirk Cousins is still available

It's wild to me that we went from laughing at the Patriots for drafting a s**t QB like Mac Jones, to resurrecting his career and people claiming they wouldnt get rid of him for any less than a first round pick.
There are QBs that will be on the market that I have confidence that Kyle could get as much success out of as Mac Jones. Zack Wilson, Carson Wentz, Marcus Mariota, and so on. People forget that Mac Jones was thought of as a trash QB before Kyle got his hands on him.

Even in the draft people thought of him as the perfect system QB for Kyle. Turns out, he is.

Plenty of people also thought he would be a good fit here after his stint in NE/Jax.
I'm just not sure the value of pointing out that a lot of people were wrong about this guy in an argument about his actual value to our team.

Didn't he have a good rookie year, and everything went to s**t when Mcdaniels left and Patricia took over as his offensive coordinator? I know that we all know he didn't have the physical traits but coming out of college he was pretty much finished product. Many even said he fits perfectly in our type of system especially if a team has all the pieces around him. Give me a 2nd round++ or we might as well keep him.

Problem is sometimes you need a play to be made outside the system. That's where Brock is infinitely better.

McCorkle might net the Niners a 2nd this offseason. No way in hell he goes for a 1st and a 3rd is too cheap imo. I'd slang him for a two in a heartbeat and snag another reclamation project to be the backup for a couple years. Fix him up and slang him a year before the contract ends as well. We can start a backup QB factory!

If traded I'm hoping we get a 2 and a good player but we'll see.

Mac has proven he can be a good QB and he's still young and has a cheap price tag, any QB desperate team will be willing to give up more to get him signed. If I'm Lynch, I'm making teams pay a hefty price for him.
