Actually Haley was last part of my guess.

Some in there led me to the UK and 1964.
The wagon and Lassie clue led me to the wagon Episode of Lassie which happened in 1964.

Legend for plus comet clue led to Haley's comet Haley born in 1964

What's funny is i thought catch 22 was too easy of a clue to be Rice and 1987

Almost. Rice is the grass seed reference.

Catch 22 is referencing Ron Heller. Forgot to list him.

So 1987 was correct but for not the reason I gave? Lol

87 is incorrect. The one player missing from the list, who isn't directly connected to the group, will give away the year. You are very close.

Such depth of thinking and connections. Brilliant.
The answer is a little more simplistic.

One final clue. Anybody posting here, including young people, have seen this legend play.

At this point just waiting on the answer.

Trent Williams was born in 88.

I did not have him as the legend but you would be right too!

Time to end this SJ

So why 88 for Heller and catch 22?

WINNER
It began(starters) one year, 1060(WinLoseDraw), with a rebellious Scot(Wallace) in a big sky country(Montana) following a comet(Haley). Carried by wagon(Carter) along with a pick pocket pied piper(f*gan), a fiery(McKyer) carpenters son(McIntyre) of Elias(Ellison), Lassie(Collie), some grass seed(Rice) and tools for cutting the cloth(Taylor), they emerged from the forest(Du Bose) at the farmyard(Barton) allotted(Lott) to the commander(Walter). Irate more than once(Cross and Rathman) they sought bright(Roberts) fame and took turns(Turner) on an original flight(Wright) to a pacific island(Sapolu-Samoan) to play catch 22(Heller) with a ball(Wilson) listed(Craig) as lost. More than satisfied(Fuller), William(Bill Walsh) was torn(His last season). And a legend was born(Steve Young figuratively or NaVorro Bowman literally).
