Could it be Matt Cavanaugh you are thinking of? 1985

I'm not sure this question has an answer. In 85 when the Raiders and Niners played in the preseason the 49ers beat the Raiders 28-21. They had a 28-7 lead entering the 4th quarter and the Raiders were able to recover two onside kicks to bring it to a 28-21 lead before fumbling on their final possession to lose the game. Montana played the first half and was replaced by Cavanaugh who was hurt in the game and replaced by Scott Barry. Montana never came back in the game, as far as I can tell, and the only time Walsh brought him back into a preseason game in the 4th quarter was against the Bears in 87.

There's very limited information available about old preseason games in general.

See, that's what I'm saying. How the world can we answer a question about a long ago preseason game?
But hey, 9moon, if you're out there right now and not having to create high tides off the southern coast of Morocco or anything (j/k ),
I still want to commend you. I mean, look at the discussion you wrought with that unanswerable question. You even got SmokeyJoe digging
up some 49er game history.

So don't feel bad or anything man.
And stay connected!

He? Who? Guy Benjamin?
So from what I gather, Guy Benjamin, if he is the guy, got injured in the preseason game, and the 49ers had no else except J. Montana to come in and finish the game?
I'm not trying to be smart-aleck or anything.
But Thanks.

It was just a stab in the dark as someone not being part of the vibe as a true fan then.

Love the play on words for your last quiz.

So great to see that!

yep yep.. it was a duel between the Raiders rookie QB Rusty Hilger and our Gun Slinger Scott Barry...

Late in the game, Bill Walsh placed Montana back in to run a Y - End Around to make sure that we score and beat them Raidazzzz !!!

All for one play..
9moon, you had my head spinning there for a second. I wondered how in the world this thread got back up there, and at first it looked to me like the usual suspect threads were deleted! Oh my! and I didn't know what to make of those two spam-looking Monopoly threads.

Lastly, will there be a Draft Day Thread?

we used to have a Live Draft weeks prior to the Draft.. that was really fun..

... as far as them old 49ers, I used to record their games whenever it would come on TV .. still may have over 50 games on a VHS recorded.. hahaha... Priceless one for me ever was the Montana KC vs Young SF... it was the only time I went against our 49ers!!

They might move one of the threads here, otherwise it will be in the draft room sub forum

Thanks GoreGoreGore. Mystery solved.
It's so odd though. This thread's supposed to be on leave till ... August. Yet it's being popped open on DRAFT DAY no less, like it's breaking news of Brock's new contract!
