I like Bethune, especially as a backup/special teamer who can fill-in in a pinch. He has noticeable limitations, especially in coverage, but has a nose for the ball around the LOS.
He was a day 3 pick and finally saw extensive playing time. Tape was mixed, but we put him in a difficult spot given the deficiencies across other positions on D.
Winters and Bethune should be much better this year, and the fact that we have both Warner and Greenlaw returning should mean we field a top 5 LB corps in the NFL.
We say this about guys every year, what makes you think they should be better this year?
TBH I agree. The guys who have a chance to truly be significantly better usually have something technical or mental they can correct.
Bethune's issue wasn't mental or technical really. He has physical limitations that make him a liability. Lack of speed and lateral mobility in today's NFL make it very hard to be a legit starter.
He is not starting material and that's OK. Special teams and backup role is his likely peak unless he can find a way to get quicker.
I'd disagree on the mental, he had a few egregious blown assignments in coverage that were killers
Fair that's true. He could improve some on assignments but will still be a poor coverage guy matched up against anyone except maybe a fullback.
