I read all these names of potential DCs and I have to confess I don't know much if anything about them. I have no idea how good they are or if they have the right makeup to be a coordinator. Every promotion in every business carries risks. I'm curious about what fans are basing their choices on. Is is because the unit they coached was good? That could be a result of the personnel. Is is because you've heard the name before? I'm asking because I never hear much about any of these guys during the year and now they're being talked about like they're really good.

Being a good position coach isn't any kind of guarantee that you'll be a good coordinator but to me its a bare minimum hurdle to get over. Have you progressed in your career as an assistant, do players seem to like and respect you, do you appear to have strong leadership skills, have the units you've coached shown progress, especially among younger players? Beyond that, there's far more that we don't know that comes out in these long interviews.

Perhaps they can get Chris Harris as DC and Wilks as CBs / Asst HC type role.
I think that Wilks most likely would see that as a demotion. I'm pretty sure that Wilks and Harris are both vying for D.C. position, and whoever loses out goes elsewhere. It also wouldn't surprise me it Kyle thought that Bullocks was ready for the additional responsibility of coaching the entire secondary as opposed to just the safeties.
If you're an upcoming DC you want to come here. Our last 2 became HCs and who doesn't want to coach Nick, Fred, Erik, Huf, and Dre ? They make the job much easier. Kokurek also is a huge plus.

I read the Kocurec [sp] doesn't want to be a DC and that he's getting a substantial raise which he flat out deserves.
If so, then I like how the Panthers responded to Wilks and hopefully he would be a great fit.

They're still trying to work things out with Greg Manusky.

I don't want Wilks.
I want Kourek.
Doesnt make sense. Front line guys are almost playing a complete different game than the back 7. A guy that only coached D line, no matter how good, would make me nervous.

Its harder to spot good coordinators or position coaches because its not simply about your unit being top 5. Case in point, I felt Vic Fangio's best year was 2014 when he dealt with all kinds of injuries, but still got good production out of the defense, little from the offense, abd statistically, it was his worse year with the 49ers.

Id agree. Id also figure a clear path to HC job goes through here. If I'm either, I wouldn't be completely opposed to a position coach job if I lost out on the DC job for a few reasons:
1. I am probably next in line if the DC gets hired as a HC
2. I am probably next in line if the DC does a poor job.
3. I can be around one of the best offensive minds in football.
4. I get to meet other up and coming offensive minds. I'm going to need people for any staff I put together as a future HC
5. I get a really good secondary with potential to be far better.
I've seen it so many times where a bright coordinator has limited experience and can't really put together a great staff. The turnover is so high and the need for HC so great, guys don't get a chance to hone their craft for long before getting the HC call. A stop with the 49ers, even as a lateral move would only make me better would be my thought process if I were Wilks or Harris.
