I wonder If Kyle will ever wake up and realise just how bad Brendel really Is?

They've tried other players at the position in camp but nobody has been able to show they're an upgrade. In any given draft there may be one or two guys that can play center in the NFL at a decent level. They usually get snapped up pretty quick since there aren't many available. It's just one reason you see centers last so long. When a team finds one that's even halfway decent they tend to stick with them unless someone falls into their lap via free agency or in the draft.

That's the first I've heard. Since when did they try other Centers with the first team? Also there were a bunch of Center much better than Brendel in free agency. The thing is they don't want to spend money to upgrade the position. Brendel is horrible, it doesn't take an NFL coach to see it.

They tried some players in training camp. I know one was Drake Nugent but he was too small I guess. I can't remember the names of te othe rguys they tried but I no they did attempt to find someine else. Not this year but the previous year. Unfortunatley those free agent centers want to get paid a lot since they're usually near the end of their career. How many centers have gone into free agency that were still relatively young and were actually good. Teams don't let those guys leave.
In this years draft there were only 3 centers selected. One each in rounds 3,5 and 7. Not much quality. in 2024 ther wer more with one each in the 1st, 2nd and 4th. The later rounds say a total of 7 more but all were selected before the 49ers picked. Unless they would have taken a chance and over drafted one of them they had no shot. I have no idea how many made the roster or are still with the teams that drafted them.

This is like every f**king play with him. How the f**k are standing behind the pile when your QB should have been following youplease replace this guy
But the PFF's Microsoft Excel spreadsheet formula said he's good!
You don't really follow PFF ratings and rankings, do you?

Matt Hennessy was a pretty good C for the Falcons in 2021 and at times in 2022 before Drew Dalman took over for him.
He must really be bad if he can't beat out Brendel.

There has been no open competition for the job. Certainly not from Drake Nugent.

Doesn't the center call protections? Maybe he's messing up there too.

Actually, there were not a lot. One that changed teams was Coleman Shelton (we talked about him a little). He is currently ranked two slots lower than Brendel with LOWER Pass Blocking rating. He got a two year deal with the Rams for $4 million less per year.
The other one we talked about was Drew Dalman. He is now the fifth highest paid Center, ranked four slots higher than Brendel. His Pass Blocking rating is only four points higher than Brendel.
The quality of Centers around the league is the lowest of any OL position, and it isn't close. There are only three with relatively equal ratings between Pass and Run blocking. Everybody else is good at one and bad at the other. A typical example is Tyler Linderbaum of the Ravens. He rates a terrific 86 in Run Blocking but 43 in Pass Protection, 11 points LOWER than Brendel.

I know about it (and football) enough to know:
1. It doesn't consider every possible factor and
2. There are tons of qualities that you can't possibly quantify
To the point where it's silly to rate an offensive lineman with a single score.

To illustrate the point I made above about the lack of balanced play among Centers, here is a listing of the top 10 with their Pass Blocking first then Run Blocking:
78 -- 80
57 -- 81
58 -- 86
65 -- 73
42 -- 86
73 -- 70
58 -- 74
68 -- 69
54 -- 75 (Brendel)
82 -- 64
Notice how PP is better than RB in only two cases.

PFF evaluates players in a number of areas with some having higher value than others. After considering all of this, they post a composite score. (This is their Basic package.)
The Premium package, that most all NFL writers use, has much more data in it. I subscribed to it one year but didn't continue because I was only interested in comparative ratings and rankings.
