It will never make sense. Excuses are allowed for a 9 year veteran, but not a player who has started 4 games (2 as a rookie, 1 in a monsoon and 1 where he got hurt after 1 nice drive).
Yup ... night and day.... One has started 46 college games and almost went undrafted.
One was a top 3 pick with very little experience, but has elite physical and mental tools....
It shows two things. Fans don't know jack s**t and apparently scouts aren't much better.
It makes no sense to give up on Lance. He's younger than Purdy lol
I guess this is the real question. Yes, Purdy is better than Lance TODAY. But..... one could argue this is as good as Purdy will be. (not a bad thing btw) We only saw him in 8 games ... But if Trey gets to play and shows improvement over time....isn't that the point? He could end up superior to Purdy. Of course nobody knows how that will pan out but again the only way to know is to play. I feel like half posters agree this is a wonderful issue to have, but at the same time we need to get Trey XP..... but others just want Purdy because they already concluded he can grant them the next Lombardi asap so to hell with Lance etc.. It's silly to me.
I concur with what you say. But I would add a few caveats.
1. Purdy will get better. He's bound to. A 23-year-old with only 8 games experience HAS to get better. He has not hit his ceiling yet. He'll get stronger. More accurate. Wiser. That's not saying that Lance's ceiling is not potentially higher. But it's not a guarantee.
2. A lot of supporters are overreacting. Overreaching. Like Purdy's an elite QB. He's not. Yet. it's not beyond imagining that he'll make it to that level, but it's not guaranteed. For him to be the team's long-term solution, he must get to the elite level. That means that he also has to play. That's a conundrum.
3. Purdy and Lance are the same age (half year difference), but I venture that Purdy's a LOT more mature. He possesses a rare calmness and humility. I believe that Lance can learn a lot from just following his example. I think that Lance recognizes that. Purdy definitely has the edge in that department and it's worth a lot.
4. Lance is fortunate in that he has this OTA and preseason to show some significant progress while Purdy is recuperating. If he doesn't, the coach will have some tough decisions to make.
Let's get real
Lance has been sitting around since September doing nothing to improve his game as he can't do much if any footwork. He can do some upper body work in the gym.
So how on earth is he going to have improved his game by now? In a few weeks he can get out on the field and start doing full weight work. But how other than improving his strength is he going to improve in time to be better than Purdy?
He will have to throw a lot of balls and work on his short game and quick release.
He will also have to work on his decision making and processing speed.
You will remember that he used to panic and just start running to early from the pocket once there was pressure. How is that going to stop overnight during the off season?
I cannot see him improving over the off season and taking Purdy's job. Lance will be a back up this coming season and won't be playing unless Purdy gets hurt,
