It seems to depend on the success and recovery timeline for whatever procedure Brock has.

If he has a successful surgery, no permanent nerve damage or whatever else, and a recovery timeline of 6 months, he's probably ready to play the preseason and start the season as QB1.

If there is permanent damage of some kind, or he has full blown Tommy John surgery, he won't likely be ready until a couple of months into the season.

I think if it's the 6 month recovery timeline, the team probably signs a backup/fringe starter QB in the free agent market, and let's Lance take all the offseason work prior to the preseason as the lead QB. If it's the longer time period, then the team may very well look to bring in Tom Brady, or find an alternative QB capable of being a stop gap for the season with Brock re-taking the job in 24, or even 25.

There will most likely be no choice. They need to prepare Lance all off season to be the starter again. Brock, IF it goes well, will need 6 months and probably a few more to get back into football shape, timing, chemistry, etc. We don't want yet another, slow start to the season. One more win this year would have had us with an extra week off and HF advantage throughout.

Thanks for the info!

Fingers crossed we don't have to sign a stop gap. Just the thought of it makes me sick.

Just for clarity, I'm mostly speculating on the different directions the team could go. I wouldn't describe what I posted as concrete information.

I do think it's a certainty we'll bring in another QB via free agent or the draft... I just think the quality of the incoming player and targeted role is going to hinge on Purdy's timetable.

I think Lance will have a much better chance of being the starter if Purdy has the shorter procedure.

For fun, Bovada has set odds for who is the opening day starter:

1. Tom Brady (+115)
2. Trey Lance (+120)
3. Brock Purdy (+350)
4. Jimmy G (+1000)
5. Lamar (+1200)
6. Carr (+2000)
7. Rodgers (+2000)
TAKE the entire 2023 season OFF buddy... rest that elbow..

This is the year we find out all about Baby Face Lance... I'm sure he already feelin the pressure of performing better than B-ROCK!!!
Purdy said if it's the 6 month recovery surgery, he can start throwing at 3 months, and will be cleared for full contact at 6 months.
This guy is a winner.

He's a got an unbelievably mature attitude and mindset for his age. True definition of "don't get too high, don't get too low."

I'm actually a huge Trey Lance believer but if Brock Purdy is healthy I want him starting over anyone, including Brady.

I am hoping what he said today in his interview is true - 3 months until he can get on a throwing program and 6 months until he's a full go.

He will miss May-June OTAs/minicamp in that he can't throw the ball fully but he will attend and take in the knowledge. He should be a full go by training camp. I also assume he is going to have trainers help him improve his body and overall fitness this offseason post surgery.

I'm not putting any limit on what he can do.

Will he come back with a stronger arm?

Tommy John surgery usually helps pitchers come back with a stronger arm. I'm not sure why there's so many posts saying the opposite. Most pitchers who get Tommy John it actually helps them. It's strengths that ligament even more.

QBs should just get Tommy John to improve their arm power, even if it's not needed. Maybe Jimmy can look into this.

Every surgeon I could find said the same thing

It returns the pitcher to their previous level. Often that is faster ball speed then to their previous ability.

They throw as fast as they did before, IE the arm is no longer beat down by wear and tear.

This likely does not apply to NFL QBs. They simply do not on average have the wear and tear of on their arm that Pitchers have.

With Brock...it might tho. The dude seems to go 100% in everything he does...would not shock me if he had some wear and tear on his arm from his pitching days.

That's what I like about him. I am sure this injury is pretty tough to deal with given how hard he works

Nice post. Largely mirrors my belief as well, with the caveat that if there's even a small doubt that Brock is healthy enough to start the season, you bring in Brady.
We may have just gone from thinking we had TWO young, future NFL starters to ZERO.

Who knows if it'll take Brock 6 months, 9 months or more. Who knows if his arm or confidence will be the same.

Who knows if Trey will be 100% at the start of next season. Who knows if he'll ever have the same mobility as before.

I hope next year is a good season for us, but as of now, we have ZERO guaranteed starting quarterbacks. Not the position we should like to be in.

Realistically, it's more likely to be a long season and we'll be lucky to sniff the playoffs. Perhaps 2024 will be our bounce back season.

I wonder if he's deciding between repair or reconstruction.

It's either be out a year or 6 months.

He is also thinking long term health. Will he lose or gain any arm strength etc etc. .
