Dak Prescott's first couple years in Dallas were phenomenal because he had an elite offensive line + Ezekiel Elliot, before all the wear and tear. He looked fantastic and people were saying he's going to be an elite QB for a long time.
Then they awarded him with a big contract, and some of those things went away... He showed himself to be a good, fringe top 10 QB that could go on a tear... but has had a number of games like yesterday, when he just didn't have the poise to win a playoff game in a high-stakes environment.
Sky is Falling, Worst-case scenario: Purdy could be the same thing, where he looks amazing this year and next. He grows as a QB, and then we give him a big contract. But by that time... Trent Williams and Juice probably retire. Kittle is older, probably on his way out. CMC, Deebo, Aiyuk may or may not be here. We can't afford the loaded surrounding cast, and he turns out to be a good, but not great QB, on an overinflated contract.
Best-case scenario: Purdy's ceiling is a lot higher than people realized. All the comparisons to Brady, Brees, Montana are warranted... He's a QB that plays with a lot of poise, and as he extends his contract, we reload and get more playmakers for him, and the 49ers continue to win with him at the helm.
FORTUNATELY, we have him on a rookie contract for a few more years. We don't need to make the decision on whether to extend him for big money now. We have some time to figure out what kind of QB he is and we'll have this surrounding cast too, so we can make a good run with him at QB now.
This is exactly, 100%, it. It's also why I think it would be smart to keep Trey in the building and see how he develops too.
Yep. Exactly why we should just enjoy this run and not get so caught up about the long-term QB situation. Just enjoy the ride and let the chips fall where they fall.
