I don't understand the cap ramifications. Why would trading Trey not free up cap space? Trades are always different. If a team is not willing to take on his contract, then yeah it makes no sense to trade him.
We would have to pay the rest of his guaranteed money. Which is 11 million. The other team does take on his contract (base salary & bonuses and such) but they weren't the ones who signed him to guaranteed money so they have no obligations.
Reason why CMC only cost us less than a million this year.

When Lance started (yes 1 game but after an entire offseason and camp) and Jimmy G. for years, there was always that concern and nervousness that something crazy might happen, even though in the end we were winning games.
Jimmy G. deserves credit, so does Purdy in what he's done in just 6-7 weeks. This offense has consistently scored over 30 points, and the nervousness has shifted to enthusiasm when the offense is on the field. One can't manufacture that feeling.
Purdy has some ways to go, let's see, time will tell.

We can't negotiate a new contract with Purdy for at least 2 more years, it's the rules in the CBA when they're on rookie contracts. Have to wait until after the third year - this makes it so people can't hold out after one good year or so.

Yeah, nightmare scenerio, but it would be nice to have Trey, should something happen.

He is already locked up until 2026 I believe. I think the org will wait at least one more (full) season before they extend his contract. Given how Shanahan flips QBs during the season, they might even take another QB late this draft, who the heck knows really.

I understand the cap ramafications, but think about Trey. He dearly wants a new start, now. Let him go and let him find a new team to continue his career. f**k the cap space.
I get what you're saying but it's still a business. If someone doesnt make us an offer that we think is worth it - then he should stay put.
Then, it's going to be Jimmy all over again. Wait for something that's never going to come and he walks for just a Comp 3rd.
We have 2-3 more years of Lance on his contract. I agree that the longer we hold onto him, the less compensation has will get, most likely, but I'd rather have a quality backup if Purdy goes down.

Just 2 more years if we don't exercise the 5th year option. There is almost no way we will exercise that option unless Trey is our FQB going forward.
