I'll preface this by saying, man do I like Brock. Hope he's our QB for a long time. Having said that, I was watching the 94 SB earlier tonight and it is amazingly apparent how lightning quick Youngs decision making was. Like every damn play. Brock looks like he's playing in molasis compared.
Go watch some of Steve Young's playoff performances outside of the 94 season.
And I do love Steve Young, not saying Brock is better!
Couple things I'll add. Yes, Young suffered from the same "choke" in big moments like Peyton Manning. That's why he's not better than Joe. That's why Peyton isn't as good as Brady.
With that said, some context. Due to the Niners dominance in the 80s the entire LEAGUE (not division) was devising ways to counter Bill Walsh's system. The Cowboys built a defense to counter the 49ers offense (kind of what Seattle did this year vs us), and Holmgren practically stole the blueprints on his way to GB. Those were some tough matchups against 2 HOF QBs and 1 HOF coach. Second, the Niners didn't do a good job of building around Steve / Jerry post 1994. Outside of 97 where we signed a bunch of semi-retired retreads (who fizzled out by the time we faced the Packers in the NFCC), we did not resign guys like Deion and Watters and instead replaced them with guys like Pope and Terry Kirby. It was a Steve and Jerry vs the world mentality and as soon as Young went down with that final concussion the dynasty came crashing down.
