It's not lumped in with anybody's arguments about Brock. It just reveals a lack of understanding of the statistics and the position.
Elway is a funny example because even a surface evaluation of his statistics throughout his career should point to questions about the validity of the statistics in the first place. Elway being overrated or average is a really common argument, and it's always centered around a comparison of his numbers (like completion percentage, passer rating, tds, ints etc) against his peers.
How else would you measure QB's and how good they were/are? Their NFL draft profile and measurables? Elway was/is the greatest QB prospect ever coming out of college. As you pointed out, he did not perform well statistically to his peers. Perhaps a better example that won't trigger people would be Joe Namath, who is in the HOF but performed below average relative to his peers.
Anyway, not trying to derail the thread which is about Purdy. My point is that some fans simply fall in love with measurables and then overrate QB's with elite traits. They make excuses for their lack of success. Then do the opposite for good/great QB's who lack elite measurables. We've seen this for decades now.
