Players say no to hometown discounts

Trey Hendrickson's expression of displeasure with the Bengals reached another former All-Pro edge rusher's scope of attention Monday.

J.J. Watt, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year and surefire future Pro Football Hall of Famer, took to social media to support Hendrickson following the edge rusher's statement. In classic Watt fashion, he was honest in his assessment: "Pay a fair price early or pay top dollar later."

"Teams want to treat it like a business, but don't like it when players do the same," Watt posted Monday.

Watt's response inspired an assortment of contributions from current and former NFL stars who rallied around the resistance to the concept of a hometown discount.

Anything new on the watch the clock for Brock contract negotiation?? Just asking for a friend. LOL

True, but don't discount that "you're still under contract and we got 2 franchise tags" clap back.

1) Only if he's good enough to warrant it at that point in time.

2),...It's only $39.6M this year and was $38M last year. I highly doubt it's going to be $50M in 2026.

3) Couple the $41M or so it's going to be with $5M for this year, divide by 2, and you're @ $23M per yr. Why is that doomsday? You have plenty of room to do some things and continue to evaluate your roster.

I dont see any wasting. I see some strong a$$ leverage to get a deal done sooner,...which was the point of my OP. The ball is in our court, and the tag exists for a reason.

We all know the point of your original post (and countless others). We just dont agree with you in the slightest bit.

Brock has been too inconsistent. He still needs to prove himself this year in order to get paid.

I know you've guaranteed us he WILL NOT show up to camp without a new deal,...so we should expect something within this next month and a half anyways.

It's actually 41 mil this year. Cap will go up again next year, and I'm sure a QB or two will get another big contract, which in 2026 (when Brock is eligible for the FT) will be even more.

So sure 50 mil a slight exaggeration, but it's not too far of. So no, niners FO isn't gonna tie nearly a 4th or of their cap space for two years with a FT.
