When Cousins signed his contract with Minnesota in 2018, he was #1 in extension AAV (28M), #1 in total AAV (28M), and #1 in guaranteed at signing (96M, 100%). He actually had a better offer from the Jets (90M/3, fully guaranteed). Cousins got an extension in 2020 that put him back to #1 on total AAV (32M) before he was replaced at age 35.

They replaced him with someone decent immediately and he suffered a catastrophic injury.

Again, they believe he is.

I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I'm here. Brock's been a stud. He's a guy I've got a lot of confidence in just as a human, but it starts with what he's done on the field these last two and a half years. We're capable of winning the Super Bowl with him. He just almost did and I know he's capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.

Well listen, I think what we know about Brock is that he's our guy. We've got, we have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He's done so much for our organization, he's won big games. Had a little tougher task, as we all did, this year with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year. We just never could string games where we were all together. And through that, he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level. So, we have every interest in him being around.

Jed -
I have every hope and every expectation that Brock is going to be a 49er for a long, long time.

From an asset allocation standpoint, it's the portfolio and how the portfolio performs. You can't look at it like 'Well, we traded first three first-round picks for Trey and we made a huge mistake...' Well, we found another quarterback. Like, the thinking was correct. You wanted a young quarterback with a core group of people we had so you can continue to add around it. But ultimately, you need to find that quarterback that can be there for a long period of time. Again, most of you guys have covered the team for a long time. Those Mike Nolan-Mike Singletary defenses were unbelieveable defenses, but when you can't put everything together on the offensive side of the ball, like we did when Jim came in, it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter if you don't have consistent play at the quarterback position. And when you find somebody that is a top-10 quarterback that can help you continually win football games, you have to make that decision. And if you do that, it just comes with consequences and you have to figure it out. I think we were, I don't know, if we were the oldest team in the league last year, but we were one of the oldest teams in the league. We were depending on, what measure you look at, one of the most injured teams last year. You have to get younger and healthier and you have to make sure you build around a core and that's what we're trying to do. (Reporter) Are you saying he's a top-10 quarterback? I think he is. I think he's great and especially when you compare him with, combine him with kyle, and you combine him with what we have, he's a heck of a quarterback and you want him to be here for a long, long time.
...
Look, I get it, fans care. You want to win and when you're in a world where everybody is watching the NFL, the first week of free agency, at least the first three days, it's a frenzy. Right? Like, you see a huge spike in social followings and things like that because it's something to get engaged in. When you are not overly active in that space, it's easy to say 'ah, you know you don't want to win'. I think we have a handful of pro-bowlers and potentially even better players on our roster still. Like, we still have a pretty good roster and you don't just have to do things the first three days of free agency. Right? Like, you look at the Philadelphia Eagles last year. You go out and get a guy like Saquon Barkley, who's a future Hall of Famer, great player. Like, that's something that made a huge impact. I don't know that, as we look at the board, that there was somebody that we felt made that type of impact more so than the decision to go pay Brock. And again, it's a decision that we made, I can't tell you exactly when, but midway through the season of we want to make sure that Brock is here for a long time. And again, you can't pay somebody quarterback money and have all of the other talen around the way we have now. You have to start filling that piece with the draft and that's the nice thing about having a lot of draft picks and having higher draft picks. We have the ability to continue to supplement our team by having somebody, the most important position there, for a long time.
...
I feel like we have a really good chance to compete, right? Like, there are certain players [that allow us to compete] but you need to make sure you fill out those other spots with people that can come in and play. And you know, again, teams go through different life cycles. And you're in a life cycle of still having a really good core of people, but some of those tangential pieces you have to address through the draft or through free agency, and a lower expectation, or lower level, so you can pay your quarterback. That's just where we are.
The public comments for me just are meaningless. I think it would be at least useful to compare comments they're making now with comments made in the past, specifically Jed's for example. There are notable differences in what Jed is saying now in comparison to what he said after 23.

That said, I believe they want to sign him on their terms of course.

Dude's really pulling quotes from post 2023 to show how they feel now?

So you don't want to take public comments seriously but think they want to sign him to a deal…and you're arguing against him being a franchise QB why?

If a deal gets done they clearly believe what they said which is why QBs get paid those deals.

Who? Are you talking about RG3? Cuz he was before Cousins.

Jimmy's like "I've seen this kinda stuff before."

Meanwhile in reality after Kyle saw Jimmy G after as many starts as Brock just had…

I haven't argued against him being a franchise QB. I am not sure about him one way or the other.

No he posted quotes from this offseason. I don't think anything in the quotes is illuminating as to how contract talks might go. Jed's comments are probably the most substantive and they're arguably a pullback from things he said following 2023.

Terms like franchise QB and elite get overused by the media and the fans. Neither has any definable meaning. Some think anyone that's a starter is a franchise QB. Some think top 15 is elite. Others thinkit's top 5.

The terms don't really matter. All that matters is can the team win with whoever the QB is, can he stay healthy and will the team be able to keep him. Ifyou want to say Brock is elite than fine. If you think he's good but not great I'm fine with that too.
