Kyle clearly likes Darnold. We've been tied to him in the past, and Kyle's comments about him are glowing…. And he's splitting reps with our high investment prospect.

We'll see if Kyle slides the rep share in favor of Lance as camp and preseason go on, but there's not a great basis to say he's simply here to challenge Lance at this point. 4.5 million base, 3.5 guaranteed, incentives up to 11 million, are not given out to motivate/challenge a player who you plan to be QB2.

Then why did they not offer him a multi year deal?

Also, I think Trey has gotten more 1st team reps than Darnold when Brock has been on a rest day.

I think if you think this question through a little bit, especially beyond simply our interest in him, you'll understand why it's not very illuminating.

Who says they didn't, and what's Darnold's interest in signing here?

*to your edit - I believe he has, at least on most days, but you're talking a 1-2 rep difference*

Darnold was a definite byproduct of two things:

1) Us losing 3 QBs last year and having no chance to compete afterward.

2) At the time of his signing, Brock Purdy had just had surgery a mere few days earlier and Lance was still working back from a second surgery on the shattered ankle. We never would've paid Sam that much if he was a lock to be the #3, that much is true. We paid him that much out of serious concern for the QB position as a whole going into this season. I think the FO and coaches got together and said "look, not only do we not know if Lance is going to have a setback, we also don't know how this surgery and recovery for Brock is going to turn out, and we cannot afford to take that chance. We've got to get the best competition we can so let's get someone with legit starting XP who might do a lot better with our crew."

Remember, there was a LOT of concern months ago that Brock might not even be able to start the season and that Lance and Darnold were competing for the starting job, not just the #2.

I am assuming both of you are just reiterating what I am saying.

Lance is on shakey ground. He's getting paid decent money and gets paid more next year but you can move on from him with no repercussions.

He's fighting for qb2/3 spot and is getting paid near 10 mill a season. He's still having to split reps which shows lack of faith or he would get the lions share of the #2 reps.

Irregardless of what was given up for him, if you look at it objectively paying a qb2/3 that kind of money is generally not done in the NFL.

Yes some backups can make that but those guys are proven to be borderline performers and don't fight being #2/3.

Most organisations that make this big of a mistake will try to cut their losses at some point and distance themselves. I would not have been surprised at all if we had done that this year if Brock was fully healthy and I won't be surprised at all if they do it next year.

Lance will be fine. He's already a multi multi millionaire. He can wipe his tears with hundred dollar bills so no need to be emotionally attached to him when he's already one foot out the door.

Really just pointing out there there's some validity in what you're saying about a potential trade, but also a valid point to be made about why it may not be the best idea this year, as well as why Darnold got the kind of deal he did. We were not in a very advantageous spot at the time we signed him.

I don't agree that the split of reps indicates a lack of faith or belief in Lance. Lynch himself has shot down that idea pretty consistently. He himself said all three guys need the reps as much as they can for different reasons. Brock needs to knock off the rust, Lance needs XP, and Darnold is kind of "swimming" just trying to learn the system right now.

Truthfully, all three QBs come with question marks entering this season. While I don't think it's impossible for Trey to be traded, it seems like they won't (and IMO shouldn't) make that deal if it doesn't help the team strengthen itself at some other position this year.

Darnold's interest in signing here was because of the stock of talent on offense and defense here. Shanahan's offense is known for being QB friendly. Perhaps he would have a chance to start at some point. You could say that my last point is reason enough to only sign a one year deal in hopes of starting and raising his stock for a bigger pay day. However, it is also known that not many QB's have digested Kyle's system in one off season. It took Ryan two to become efficient. So I say that right there would be reason enough to want to sign a multi year deal. Especially if Shanahan likes him as much as you say he does.
What I want to see happen is Brock or Trey goes bananas and then next draft we select in the later rounds another QB we can groom. Once their rookie deal is up we need to do this thing all over again and keep this QB room young cheap and talented

well you dont have to. Kyle already has.

I must of missed that. Can you show me the quote or video?

all you have to do is pay attention to all the words and actions coming from KS and JL. it's not a mystery.

That's too difficult for some. He wants the exact quote where Kyle says, " I anoint Bock the guy". Forget all other actions and words lol

Yea, I don't think it's reasonable to cast aside every piece of evidence available and rely on a theory that it takes two years to excel in Kyle's system… especially given the most recent piece of evidence is a 7th rounder excelling from the jump (though not to Matt Ryan's MVP level). He doesn't have to master the system.

Not to mention he'd have to be lied to by Kyle and CO or be willing to accept a QB3 role on Day 1 of free agency, for less reported money and opportunity than he would have had elsewhere.

This is a gigantic reach. He signed here because our QB1 was injured with an unclear return date, and he's being given an opportunity to compete for QB2/short term QB1 (prior to knowing Purdy's status) on an awesome team with a great system. This is confirmed by his contract, Kyle's comments, and the fact that he's actually splitting valuable reps in the fight for that position. It's in your face obvious.

Exactly.

What would be the point of choosing this team for its offense and defense if your most likely never to see the field as QB3. Can't bank on several freak injuries happening again.

What was more likely to have happened, is that Kyle offered Sam the opportunity to compete for QB2, which would have a good chance of playing, if QB1 didn't heal quick enough.

Yup, and that is consistent with Kyle's words and actions since.

Lol, this was argued about a bunch here just based on the contract (and the concept of it before Sam was even signed).

You are pretty much repeating exactly what I said in an earlier post in this conversation. 🤣

What we're discussing is whether Darnold was signed here primarily to push Lance. I'm telling you no… they actually like him. You countered with the question about why he didn't sign for more than one year if Kyle actually likes him to that level. And I effectively countered because he's interested in rejuvenating his career. He has interests too. The answer to your question is to look at both sides of the contract… not just one.

I said he was brought here as an insurance policy because of the Brock's injury and in case Trey wasn't progressing. It was in my first post 1 page back. You asked to elaborate why I thought Darnold signed here. So I did and now you are focusing solely on that instead of the body of things I said throughout the entire conversation. Then you repeated pretty much what I originally stated as if I never said those things.

Yes, and I added that they clearly like him. It's not necessarily just insurance. For example, Trey could progress and still be the odd man out. Read my last post (or just the back and forth) to see how the conversation progressed. Moving on…

Yeah I have the same thoughts, but when you argue Trey didn't have CMC or Kittle its on deaf ears.

All I know is if Purdy doesn't play well its going to get interesting. Also for a lot of this fan base if Purdy doesn't look nearly as good as last year (what are the odds of that) its still going to get noisy lol

He looked fantastic though, but my rational mind still says expect a regression to to average compared to what we saw since he is no longer a surprise and opponents have tape on him.

They had tape on him last year, the Seahawks even got to go at him in the playoffs after having plenty of tape on him. Bill Belichick says by the third or fourth game there's plenty of tape to get a feel for what someone can and can't do. Most qbs improve year two, not regress. Why would you think he would get worse after having time to learn more of the offense? That seems unlikely.

Guys are open in SF, you have a HOF LT, and a top in NFL gameday HC. I have doubts the supporting cast will allow him to struggle. I have a hard time seeing it. If by regression, you mean he will lose a game he starts and finishes, sure. He was on a bit of a silly pace. But if you are talking the fanbase wanting to see another QB in there.. defenses aren't gonna have an answer for all we can put on the field. And he will find and hit, open guys.

By that logic Trey shouldn't struggle if he was in the lineup either. There is an immense amount of talent all over the field.

Cisco is on the money though. What if Brock comes out in the first 3 games and looks like Jimmy? 175/1/1 type of stats with that int coming at the worst possible time. If that's the case and that luster is rubbed off it may be time to check out investment in Trey with a healthy roster around him.

And the above statement is exactly why they should be directly competing for the QB 1 spot in camp instead of him being given the job based on the stretch at the end of the year when our team was clicking on all cylinders.

Trey hasn't played anywhere close to as good as Brock though, you are making a huge assumption based on absolutely nothing but what you hope would happen. The people that see both players every day have already seen what they need to see. Maybe it's some of our fanbase that needs to adjust to the reality of the situation.
