I think the team is also looking at the upcoming salary cap and at this point, that falls in Brock's favor. The team has openly talked about the trade up because they wanted a rookie scale QB to help with the salary cap going forward to keep the team in tact. Since Lance will only have one more year remaining before he will demand a fortune, I think the team views Brock as QB1 and is going to give him as many opportunities as possible to secure that - outside of his stellar play last year.
so I think that's something Lance doesn't have working in his favor in regards to getting QB1. He would have to play out of his mind to change that right now.
that's just my opinion, I don't think the team cares about being "right" with the picks or trying to recoup the lost capital - I think they look at that as over and done with.
i just want to see Brock get better and then Lance and darnold get as crisp as possible to make the QB room strong for the season, If they're needed.
You got me at TL will demand a fortune
Well if he plays well, not even great, just above average - the going rate is like $35M+ these days. Since the top QBs are making late $45M-$50M. I don't think there is any way in hell we would want to do that to our cap.
I view TL as a backup, no offense to TL, and I know ppl get sore on the subject.. but I am trying to keep a reality based view. BP is QB1. TL is backup. So TL gets backup dollars, he can take a look at Darnold, if he wants to know what that looks like. The current Darnold contract. We can update this calculation, if he moves up from backup to starter.
I view him as the backup too, because that's what he currently is. I was just saying that some people are hoping he can beat out Brock, I was saying that I don't think Kyle/John really care for that because they desire a cheap QB who can play at a high level. Since this is year 3/4 of his contract, we've sorta lost that benefit and he it goes in and plays well - he's going to want a ton of money soon. Where as Brock will be cheap for the next three years. So Lance would have to play significantly better than Brock to justify that. I don't think the team is eager to do that.
Yup, BP helps the salary cap in a number of ways, It's a rook deal, it is year 2 of that deal, instead of TL which is year 3. Also he makes about 800-900k per year (varies a bit each year). TL makes like 10x what BP does. even on the rook deal, BP is way cheaper. I don't think TL will want a ton of money soon, I think he would just want a place where he can have an NFL paycheck, and compete, like what Sam has now. I'm forecasting BP to get the starts, and play well, for the time being. Only way I see a big TL payday, is if BP gets hurt, so TL has games to showcase himself, or if BP doesn't play well, giving TL such games.
It's an interesting situation.
Could Lance have officially be on the cusp or already at the point of turning the corner? I mean, let's be honest, even if the injuries hadn't happened, it's not really any surprise he needed a bit more time to adjust.
Let's say he's there now, like at that sort of pre-breakout stage young guys get, where they need maybe 6-8 games (or so) of reps before they really start coming into their own.
But, in this hypothetical, what is best for us..
Brock stays healthy all year, plays well, and we hope Trey does a small extension to lower his cap hit and continue developing here?
If he has to play this year and does super well, does he compete with Brock to start next year? Or do we try to trade him? What would his market be?
There's a lot of possibilities. At the end of the day I'm just glad we have fortified the position to hopefully never have a repeat of how last season ended.
