He deserves QB1 but he hasn't cemented himself there. If Lance plays well through camp and is deemed our best choice for QB1 in week 1, then we go with him. If Lance essentially plays like Purdy did last year (essentially perfect), it would be tough to pull Lance. Barring that outcome, Purdy will resume his QB1 spot when healthy.
You need to take this rational smart approach right on out of here. We only deal in suppositions and conjecture viewed from the perspective of people who put a player above the team.
I've been a Lance fan from the moment we made the trade up. I have to admit I'm disappointed to this point, not necessarily from him, but a confluence of unfortunate events. Still, Lance represents the highest potential our offense can achieve. The problem is that Purdy's floor is really high, he came in and immediately had success. We should expect a small slide backwards this season as D coordinators pull apart his weaknesses, but I think he can legitimately be a fringe top-10 QB in the league. And paired with this roster, that may be enough to win a SB. Lance has much higher volatility, but the low-probable boom possibility with Lance remains intriguing.
If Mahomes is essentially what Lance could achieve at this "low-probable boom possibility" and Brees is the same for Purdy, I think everyone would agree you'd want Mahomes.
With all that said, it will be nearly impossible for Lance to usurp Purdy, unless he essentially throws a perfect game between now and whenever Purdy is in football shape.
