New guy here. Anyway, why draft pick(s)? How about a trade for couple of defensive backs, for instance?

Player for player trades are less common. Multi player trades are even more rare. I think its just hard and time consuming to get all of the contract stuff worked out for each player involved. For instance how much money thats left on the contract gets paid by which team, pro rate the days in the calendar year, etc.

1) welcome, Al our knees aren't what they used to be

2) why not both? A 2nd and a veteran CB?
Just your friendly (probably multiple times per week) reminder that SAM DARNOLD was traded for a:

2nd, 4th, and 6th.

Let's all come back to reality, folks.

Starting QBs are valued.

Jimmy's a starting QB.

Therefore, he will be valued.

Excellent point on both the knees and the trade scenario.

Garoppolo played well enough down the stretch of the season to boost his trade value, Rapoport said. In likely his final game with the Niners, Garoppolo went 16-for-30 with 232 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Rapoport compared Garoppolo's trade value to that of Carson Wentz's from last offseason. Coming off a year in which he threw 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, Wentz still netted the Eagles a conditional second-round pick that turned into a first. The return for Garoppolo, who has one year remaining on his deal, could be similar."

"The 49ers are in an incredible leverage position because they have one, and not everybody does…I would imagine if (Wentz) got traded for a two, could they get that back? Probably could, would be my guess. Or better. I think they're in a pretty good spot." Rapoport

Rapoport has proven to be one of the best when it comes to reading how things will come down in the NFL. If he is suggesting that there will be as many as six teams contending for Garoppolo, and the final deal will be the Wentz deal, or better, that is going to prove to be pretty close. We would all love it if that happens. It would make the Lance trade up close to a wash. In effect, it would mean we traded a 30-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo straight up for a 22-year-old Trey Lance and saved $15M in the process.

Just your friendly reminder that:

-Sam Darnold was 23 years old when the trade was completed. He was believed to still have promise/upside.

-NFL franchises are arrogant. It doesnt matter that Darnold sucked for the Jets. NFL teams believe they are smarter/better coached than other teams.

You tell people to come back to reality, but you ignore the reality of this Darnold situation.

Yup. It's a lot easier for GMs to believe that you can get more out of a player that's stuck on a losing franchise than to assume you can get more out of Jimmy G who had Kyle Shanahan as his coach and a great team around him.

Sam was younger, drafted higher, has a bigger arm, more mobility, and the team aspect I already mentioned.

My worry is that team already view Kyle as an offensive master, so whatever he got out of Jimmy must be his ceiling. Don't see any teams thinking they're smarter or could get any more out of him.

I think he can fetch a day 2 pick + another pick that is contingent on how many snaps he plays, to protect his new team from injury.
Time for the rubber to meet the road. Judging from the posts I read here we are getting either multiple firsts or a half eaten bag of cracker jacks.
For some reason an outright 1st round pick doesn't seem likely. The 49ers technically have leverage among suitors to bid them against one another and take highest...but they don't really have overall leverage because everyone knows they have to deal him. So teams will only go as high as they have to, or are willing to, in order to beat out others.

My guess is a second and a fourth rounder, or somehow a pick + player package.

For some reason, that over a 1st rounder seems more plausible.
