Deforest Buckner. Left due to moneyball. And his replacement now looks like Tarzan but has chronic knee issues that we knew about but decided to ignore. I know trading Buckner allowed us to keep AA and Ward but I really don't care. Ward is good and AA is good when he has beasts next to him but Buckner is a top 3 DT bar none. Him and Bosa next to one another for years to come would have been lovely to watch.

Maybe, just maybe, let Kinlaw's career play out longer than 1 season to make a judgment. 🙄

You think his knees will get better with age? Not to mention the man is so huge I'm sure that has to play a part with his knee problems. I hope he succeeds, really do, but I'm skeptical to say the least.
Should have promoted seifert to front office and kept shanny as HC.

McCaffrey, Delanie, Frank. Shoulda found a way to keep Hicks. DEFO! SMITH!

Not sorry to see TO go.

Theres an alternate universe where mike Shanahan was our HC and wins 2 SBs with a RB committee consisting of Ricky Watters, Garrison Hearst and Terrell Davis.

Wesley Walls. We had Brent Jones, who was the roommate of Steve Young. So it was completely understandable why the team let Wesley Walls go.
The key departures were Ricky Watters and Mike Shanahan.

Talent evaluation went from great under Walsh to horrible post Walsh. In fact, we only recovered on that front when Mc Cloughan was in the FO.

But as others said, if the team had kept Watters after winning the 1995 SB they would have won 1-2 more at least. We had all the other pieces plus veterans like Young and Rice who could overcome the deficiencies of the OC. Instead we had Derek Loville as a starting RB. That position wasn't properly addressed until Hearst but several years were wasted. If Shanahan had succeeded Walsh then we would have solved two problems- the talent evaluation problem especially with RB and the OC problem. Who knows he might still be coaching the team today.
Y.A. Tittle without a doubt. He won two MVPs with the Giants.

Gore, Montana, Rice and TO all had their best years by far in SF. Sanders played well as he did for Dallas but his best years were in Atlanta. Imagine how ATL fans felt watching him help 1st the Niners then the Cowboys win SBs.

His one year with SF was easily the best season of his career.

It was but it was just one year. His overall contribution in ATL was huge. He returned a few punts and kickoffs for TDs which is something he didn't do in SF. The fact tha the only played here one year is why I don't really consider him a Niner. He was a rental like some of the other former greats that they signed that year. He played well for Dallas for about 5 seasons. Not as good as his one season in SF but longer.

DPOY and was a big part of winning our 5th. I definitely consider him a Niner. He made a bigger impact on the franchise in one season than most guys do over long careers in SF.

The crime with trading Haley's was that we did not get a first round pick for him, only a second and the Cowboys used their 1st that year to draft Emmitt Smith. The pendulum of power shifted dramatically that year.

Um no. Emmitt was drafted in 1990. Haley didn't get there until 2 years later.

Not even close. He was more dominant and made more plays with Atlanta. His season with us, the entire secondary was Pro-Bowl level! Teams were mostly afraid to throw at him, but I remember a game where someone did (Saints, I think) they burned him 2 or 3 times. Not saying he was bad the season with us at all, but his name value elevated him for sure.

We lose Deion and Watters after winning the SB. Played from behind from that point.

Deion was the extra grain of sand that tipped the scales for SF over Dallas. For about 10 years when the season would kick off and the talking heads would do the week 1 "Who do you think will be in the SB this year on the NFC side"?, the panel would always say the 9ers or Cowboys.
It was a good choice but SF didn't get over the Dallas hump until we lured Deion away that season and got that lock down corner, then Dallas signed him back and the hump was back until both teams eventually lost key pieces, coaches etc and pretty much went into the abyss for many many years.

On another note, two coaches I think they got wrong in firing and pulled the plug on too early was Mooch and Seifert.

I don't think Dallas had our number after 94. If I recall, we had ownage on them from that point on but unfortunately we started getting owned by the Packers, and it went downhill from there.
It would have been interesting to see how long Montana could have played with the QB ultra protection rules of today. He played until 38 with some brutal injuries.

I remember the 1997 NFC Championship at the Stick, The Pack beat us 23-10. They physically beat us and Favre had such velocity on his throws it appeared as if Steve was throwing rainbows in comparison.
