Benjamin is the PR and maybe sometimes Aiyuk

Benji isn't on the 53 man roster….kyle said it will be someone that's on the 53 man roster

I saw this tweet earlier and I had figured that Aiyuk would now be the primary returner. I am not a fan of putting our number 1 receiver on the field and exposing him to more hits. I hope we figure something else, otherwise....

I dont want Aiyuk back there for the reason you stated. I dont want Ambry Thomas or Elijah Mitchell back there for fear of a Kyle Williams moment from one of the rookies. I hope they have another option.
I believe Sanu has done some punt returns in the past. He's not explosive but reliable hands

I said the same exact thing E-49er. I think we all can agree on that. Kyle can't be so stubborn on this because we haven't had any threat in the return game since Ginn Jr about a decade ago. It's time to upgrade our special teams even at the expense of a roster spot. Get a damn return specialist now. It would be worth it as long as he's a good punt returner.
My best guess:

KOR: Ambrey Thomas & Elijah Mitchell
PR: Brandon Aiyuk (fair catches everything)
GR: Trent Sherfield & Elijah Mitchell

Look around the NFL. Return specialists/threats are barely a thing anymore. Kick returns have lost lots of value and I think there were maybe 3-4 punt return TDs all of last year. I'm not saying it's wrong or right but Kyle is not alone in not prioritizing it.

No way will Thomas be active. I think Mitchell and Hasty return kicks. Auyik PR
I love a good return as much as anyone, but the fact is their value isn't wha tit once was. Every other kickoff or punt return has a flag thrown for an illegal block. It's just the way the league is now. Think about it. How often do you see highlights of a big return anymore. It used to be far more common. Now it's becoming a rarity.

Besides the flags that seem to be thrown on every kickoff or punt return there was the rule change that now reduces kick returns because so many result in touchbacks. The NFL is trying to reduce the collisions that occur on kick returns. The final nail is the way most teams have punters that kick away from the return or are able to drop it inside the 10 yard line where the returner never touches it.

I just read a couple of articles about this and returns are becoming extinct. It's all in the name of safety. Sad as it may be, the great kick returners are going the way of the dinosaur.

I just want to secure possession on a punt return. The defense did its job, get the offense on the field. Just don't fair catch with 10 yards of room - a 5 yard return is fine. Kyle Williams ruined it for me.
I want some big plays from out return game. Sure would be nice to just need 1 1st down and you are already in scoring position. Actually help out the defense and offense. Just b/c we suck at it i'm not going oh well let's just get fair catches and be happy.

I think this and other off seasons is a lesson in webzone overreacting. Every season we have camp favorites and players we will lost to waiver wire. This year the Niners lost 3 to the waiver wire. Which is a sign of a strong team if you lose players and claim no one from wavier wire.

From pre season I am shocked no one picked up Brendel (now on active roster) Colin Mckivitz ( I thought someone would claim him ) or Alex Barret

No shock Nsimba Webster claimed- the only mistake in my opinion, but I predict Travis Benjamin will be brought up from PS if they struggle.
Does anyone remember how great John Taylor was at returning punts while STILL being an excellent wide receiver?
You guys are right about returns being devalued. Sucks because those, especially puny returns, we're some of the most fun plays to watch.
Devin Hester and Dante Hall were two of the most exciting players of all time.

Kyle has consistently said there is no room on the roster for someone who can only return kicks/punts/ST player. That guy must also have the ability to play a position as well. Webster was a liability on the field, hence he was a cut.

In a move that has drawn expected criticism, Dontae Johnson made the team primarily as a ST guy but he can also play on the corner and the slot. He's a good example of how Kyle wants to set up the roster.
