First thing I thought about when I heard the news was the Niners have solid intel the Jets aren't taking Wilson at #2. If they were, then the trade is with them, not Miami. Pretty sure Shanahan wants Wilson...he fits Coach's offense very well. Another thought is WRT Lance...he certainly didn't hurt himself at his Pro Day...in fact, he blew it up. His experience level could be a red flag for our braintrust...if so, I get it. I think if the Pats offer a 2nd or even 3rd rd pick for JG, the Niners take it. Their 3rd rd pick is much better than the end-of-the-rounder they gave up to Miami. All of this is pure conjecture, but at a minimum this trade executes what most of us have thought...they're putting their chips into the center of the table for a QB not named Jimmy G.
Word is that Kyle is ok with any of the top 3 QB's. Steve Young made that historic 50+ yard run in '88 to seal a playoff spot and a super bowl championship. The two back to back super bowl years ('88 and '89) Steve Young started 3 games when Montana (I guess) was injured. If a Rookie QB deal is 3 years at bargain prices (defer to AB81 on this), conceivably you can keep a rookie behind Jimmy for three years and trade Jimmy in the 4th - to have that QB depth. Patriots with Tom and Jimmy won two super bowls, and maybe one reason is tremendous QB depth.
I see you still will not accept Jimmy is NOT in there plans for the future. This is not like The packers taking Love at the end of the 1st round. They gave up a lot of capital they have moved on from Jimmy it's just a matter of when they cut ties.
Who knows what their pans are until they act?

They could be trading Jimmy tomorrow for all I know. I think they'll be taking it a year at a time regarding Jimmy and the Rookie QB. As others have said, if Jimmy wins a super bowl this year - do you trade him? I wouldn't. But that assumes he stays healthy and wins a super bowl. I think his health is the main reason they are doing this, not so much his performance on the gridiron. But I also think this is the perfect move to motivate Jimmy to take care of himself, or he will lose his job if he can't stay healthy go to work.
