I need to ask, what is it about Griffith and Alferi that you like to make the 53.

Also Jullian Taylor will be PUP'd so only misses 6 games, potentially Blair if he's not 100%, hoping he is.

Also DJ Reed could technically go on NFI since it was a non football injury.

One last thing, I'd hate to lose Jauan Jennings, I don't see the value in keeping Benjamin over Jennings. I get he can return kicks and punts, but that means either Pettis, who I don't think the 49ers will cut, or Jennings are the odd man out. Tough decisions.

Good questions AB. I have the same. However, I think Jennings makes it to PS easily. Benjamin may have value early on. I lean toward keeping him.

Love these critical reviews...can't tell you enough how much I appreciate these AB!

Good question, let's take a look:
SAM: Azeez Al-Shaair, Mark Nzeocha & Jonas Griffith
MIKE: Joey Alfieri
WILL: Joe Walker & Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

--- not a ton of competition here. We do know Nzeocha is a quality ST player but not much of a SAM. And he's expensive. They brought in Joe Walker because, "...Walker took a first-round pick's job last year, started 11 games and had 65 tackles for the Chargers" and is a good ST player. He's a lock IMHO.

So that leaves a competition for 2 spots between Azeez Al-Shaair, Jonas Griffith, Joey Alfieri & Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles.

Alfieri is another young veteran who can play ST and play LB pretty well in the NFL when given a shot:
Alfieri put up 37 tackles (21 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, forced fumble, fumble recovery, three pass breakups and that one touchdown in his return to outside linebacker after a wayward journey to inside linebacker in 2017. The 6'3" 239-pound Alfieri graded out at 75.7 per PFF,

We know Azeez Al-Shaair & Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles are familiar with the systems here but Al-Shaair did play very poorly when he did play (41.9 PFF grade). He's out unless he gets a full off season to shine.

The team resigned Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles again and really seem to like him from things I've read IIRC. But he's small...low 215ish and kind of goes back and forth from SS to LB. That might be a bonus given he ran a 4.57 at 210. So it's between him and Jonas Griffith:

As to I.R. and types, correct, I didn't really specify which kinds which will make a big difference on the final 53.

Me too! Imagine my face when I added Pettis and subtracted Jennings. But it was more because Pettis can play all 3 WR spots and emergency PR and Jennings needs a lot of conditioning and development and adds depth to Hurd's swiss army knife specialty role. He could probably be easily stashed on the PS.

Gotcha buddy, I haven't seen either play, so I need to do research on them.

N/p. If you find more let me know. I'm not dug in by any means obviously.

Happy 4th to you and your family Jason!

Same to you buddy
Given the new rule about having two PS guys move up on game day, with one being an OL, I think there is tinkering. Reynolds and Skule might be on those guys that move up on game day, as opposed to making the 53. That might make Garland, Coleman, McK and maybe Compton as the 53 guys. Although you can argue that if you always have to promote a PS OL, maybe you only carrry 8 on the 53?

That could also mean on the backs might make to game day from the PS if they can return kicks. I think Ahmed returned KO's in college.

I actually think the new rule is for the 48 man game day roster, 8 OL need to be active, so we had only 7 in the SB, in this scenario we'd need an 8th.

I'm unsure of the complete breakdown of the 55 man roster with 2 PS players a week, but I do know they get paid a set rate for the season, no more pay bumps, like how Elijah Lee got almost $645K as a PS player a year ago, now it's like $8K a week might be a little more. Saves team some money, plus with the extra 2 players you can add, it saves you from cutting someone and promoting someone if you need to get a PS player, just have him active for the game.

New rules say you have to keep 9 OL

Where did you see that? The only thing I saw was 8 OL on Active Gameday Roster.
