People are calling Jennings a WR1 again and the reason given was injuries to players ahead of him. It was hyperbolic intentionally. Aiyuk getting injured didn't make Jennings a better receiver.

Now they're talking about Jennings starting the season on the IR which would make him inelligible for the first 4 weeks. I'm really tired of these contract issues getting in the way of football. These guys act like they can't put food on the table unless they get a new multi million dollar deal.

Why not just place him on season ending IR? This way he doesn't have to play and we don't have to pay (extension).

Works out great for everyone.

Which is kind of funny because food gets put on the table for them by the team during the season lol

And on the same token people are downplaying him too. The guy had some really nice moments and I could easily see him keep climbing and I can see him being really special (I think he already is)

He's special as a WR3. The difference from 2023 to 2024 is targets. He didn't actually take some leap in his performance outside of getting 350% more targets.

He's a REALLY good WR3 playing from the slot and run blocking. But 113 targets is a LOT of targets for Jennings level of WR, and if it happens again the team is in a BAD way.

So, not downplaying him being absolutely great at his role, just not projecting him into a different role he's not so suited to.
Without knowing everything that's going on behind closed doors, I'm just sick of the extortion from year to year. I totally understand that holdouts/ins are commonplace but it feels like they're getting more and more rampant with us seemingly always caving. How about show up and practice with your team and YOUR CONTRACT and have those discussions as you go. Oh, and "calf" my ass.

This would be serious hardball and probably the players Union and Jennings agent would cry foul. And be would probably say his injury isn't season ending.

Most importantly it affects our offense and Brock's options during the first 1/4 of the season.
Bring back Bourne and tell JJ he's not gonna earn anything by sitting the bench.

The NFL as a whole would have to pass some kind of rule on the rookie and FA contracts. Play out the terms of your deal or be barred from participating in the nfl for 5 years.
The problem on the other side is once a player gets past their guaranteed money a team can cut him for any reason. Players don't get that protection on the ends of their contracts.

I wonder if they'll try to do this if Bourne is cut by tomorrow's deadline.

Going to be interesting to see what happens w/ JJ. If healthy, this team could sure use him out there, and he's got some incentives teed up where he can't afford to miss many/any games this year:

$3.5m of JJ's incentives (Lombardi posted this):

50% of snaps = $1.5m

60 catches = $667k

600 yards = $667k

6 TD = $667k

I think Bourne will be cut tomorrow. They got Diggs, Collins, Douglas, Boutte, Williams, Chism, and Baker

the issue with Bourne is he's been out with an ankle injury and really no one knows what's up there. I'm guessing they're trying to move him before the deadline and don't want him to practice.

Exactly right. His numbers soared because of injuries to Aiyuk and a slow start by Pearsall due to his circumstances. He's not anumber one and probably not evena great number two. He's performed great for a 7th round pick but you can't pay every WR like a star. I don't know what the 49ers have offered himbut I'll bet it's a nice increase.

I don't think they have that option anymore.

I think it was Tim K who said 2 years at $13M and he doesn't tend to fabricate stories.
