JJ's just penciled in to start because they don't know if they have a better option yet. If Watkins kills it in camp he might start and JJ may go back to the slot.

You know until last year when so many players were lost to injury JJ's best year was worse than Robinson's best year? And last year JJ's performance numbers went down relative to targets ... he got bigger numbers not because he was better but because he got more chances.

Enlighten me on how any WR can show they got better without the chances to do so?? The two go hand in hand

By having more success per opportunity.

Kittle had 19 fewer targets but managed 1 more catch than JJ. He also averaged 1.5 yards more and ended with 2 more touchdowns. In 2023 Aiyuk had 8 fewer targets than JJ last year but turned them into 400 more yards ... even though he got fewer chances than the year before his production went up.

JJ is a good WR3 and he's really perfect in that role for the 49ers. The only issue is people suddenly thinking he deserves to be a WR1.

He's an ideal WR3 with two star players ahead of him. It's not 2023. We have a star WR coming off major injury, unproven young players, and a bargain free agent signing in Robinson. He has experience in our system and with our QB and produced like a starter when given that opportunity.

I really haven't seen anybody suggest that he's a number 1 receiver or, more importantly, that he be paid like one. I have seen people suggest he was our best WR last year and may be this season as well depending on Aiyuk's play once he returns. Seems pretty reasonable.

Yes, JJ may be the best WR on the 49ers to start the season, and this WR group has far more questions than answers. I still think if JJ is the 49ers best WR by the end of the season the team is cooked.

Read back in this thread and you'll see people saying JJ could be a WR1.

The 49ers don't have anyone who is a #1.

Aiyuk could be. Not saying it's likely but he has the talent.

And THAT is a problem. It's like Pandora's box. Everyone who has a good year suddenly wants a pay raise.
In the last 2 years we drafted Pearsall, Cowing and Watkins but we extended Aiyuk and we're gonna extend Jennings.

What's the point in drafting 3 receivers in 2 years (including one in the 1st round) if we're gonna extend the ones we already had?

I don't remember seeing anyone making that claim. What I have seen is people saying he was WR1 last season; myself included, and that he would be for this season as well.

Aiyuk was trash last season after missing camp. This year; he'll be coming off of major injury on top of missing camp. It might just be me; but I think anyone thinking that he will hit the ground running the moment that he comes back is delusional. I don't think we see Aiyuk return to himself or "our expectations" until the end of season/playoffs; if ever, this year at least.

And for the initial comment in bold; you have to get better to get opportunities, and you need opportunity in order to get better. The two go hand in hand and should go without saying; but I digress.

3 years 45 million 20-25 guaranteed is the number that I would hope works for both parties.
If the young receivers on the team work out then with that amount for JJ I think he would be an attractive trade option for another team.

The 49ers clearly are willing to pay for stars. Trent Williams makes big money but they keep letting OLs go and replacing them cheap. CMC makes big money but they keep drafting RBs. Kittle makes big money but they keep drafting TEs. Warner makes big money but they keep drafting LBs.

The only drafted players at those positions (including WR) that have been stars were Deebo, Aiyuk, Warner, Kittle, and Greenlaw. They gave larger contracts to Deebo and Greenlaw too ... but injuries took their value down below where the team was willing to pay them that money any longer.

It's a little frustrating for fans seeing "their" players go, but it makes some sense to me. The team is going to always be thin in positions groups with stars.

The one exception they have set aside is the defensive line. Lynchahan feel that the DL is the most important group for investing in multiple stars.

If Aiyuk comes back to what he was and one of the other WRs becomes awesome then Aiyuk will be sent down the road most likely.

Aiyuk is virtually certain to not be the best WR for his first game, but the fact that he might be the best by the end of the season is the point really. That we can see the possibility that a player, who is 2 years removed from good performance and 1 year from a major injury, COULD be the best WR over a fully healthy JJ is in itself telling about JJ.

JJ didn't get better to get opportunities, his teammates who were better gave theirs up. CMC, Aiyuk, Pearsall missing significant time creates those opportunities. Do you think Juice got better to get nearly double the targets from 2023 to 2024? Or maybe it was that there were a LOT more opportunities available because of injury?

I think the team plans for Aiyuk to be gone by 2027 based on the fact that 27/28 are the years they put in his contract to make the numbers look big, so cutting him in 27 saves them $60M. That 3/45 would get JJ's deal ending before the next round of big contracts come due so it might work for the team, I just don't know that the team values JJ as much as you do in the long term.

I are probably correct. I do have a special place in my heart for JJ. I was at the game Vs. The Rams a couple years back when he had some huge plays to bring us back in the second half of the game. I love his game.
