You're probably correct, but honestly SB MVP (and NBA Finals MVP and World Series MVP) have to be the most overrated awards in sports.

Malcolm Smith won a SB MVP and nobody cares. He sucked with us, that's all we remember.

We can't judge players by how they played in a single game, even if it happens to be the most important one. Nick Foles had the greatest game of his life in a Super Bowl—literally outplayed the GOAT—and where has it gotten him?

And as another poster mentioned, he didn't even win SB MVP. He ALMOST won it. I'm pretty sure this entire fanbase is beyond sick of "ALMOST!" at this point.

His per target production went down last year. He just got more opportunities. He's not fast, he's not particularly athletic, he's just physical. He's a good player but is probably best suited as WR3.

Total yards isn't much of a measure of the quality of a WR.

I like JJ being a Niner and hope he stays, but people talking like he's a star are just nuts.

Agreed. There's a reason he's trying to get paid right now. He knows he's not getting the same amount of opportunities this yr.

Yep

Yep

I am not sure who is gonna get the opportunities. So many unhealthy or unproven.

Someone like Derrick Henry has barely missed any games throughout his nine years in the league

"Saquon Barkley is also aging and injury-prone. Would you not have paid him?"

No, I wouldn't pay him the money he got either. And I'd like to point out he didnt hold out and I didnt hear anything about any achilles issues.
I wouldnt be surprised if Barkley, after a very long season by his standards last year, breaks down early this season.

Our team was too reliant on CMC, and they need to learn how to operate without him anyway. The point is, you can't pay everybody. So starting with the most replaceable positions - Trent Williams can hold Niners at gunpoint and they wouldnt be able to find a suitable replacement anyway - RB, WRs are the ones who you can find in draft for very cheap and be quality. Yes, they wont be peak CMC, Barkley or Henry, but you cant have cake and eat it too. If you want to get younger and cheaper, paying old RBs who can break down 20m a year is probably the first thing you dont do.
You can always find an exception to everything. There's a reason why RBs don't last that long. They get hit almost every time they get the ball. CMC is not just any running back. He's basically a slot receiver who can run the ball.

I do believe Shanahan will give him a lighter load this year because he finally a "CMC-lite" in Guerrendo. Elijah Mitchell was the closest thing to that but couldn't stay on the field. If Guerrendo stays healthy, I see a 60-40 split because Guerrendo is also a threat in the run and pass game. He is what made Deebo expendable and we finally get to see what Shanahan had in mind for Jalen Hurd.

This team in my opinion has spent money on players who are a lot less worthy of it than JJ. JMO

But the big difference between him and Jauan is that Jauan showed he had that dog in him in college. He had big catches all over his tape.

But all the young guys have something that Jauan doesn't and that's blazing speed.

I'm guessing he'll be signed before camp starts next week.

Give him a couple more million this yr and go from there

Not asking for a couple. He wants money and term.

Just curious where are you getting that from? I haven't dug far into this so you may very well be right just would like to see the source.

I'm sure some teams might want him but not as a #1 or even a #2. He's in a system now that takes full advantage of his skill set. He's not asked to do more than he's capable of. He knows the system. It's to his advantage to stay with the 49ers this year since Aiyuk is still a question mark and the rest of the receivers are mostly unproven. It's a chance for him to show his talent a little more.

I think he's a decent WR for what he's asked to do. I think he's a better route runner than what people give him, but he's not some top end WR that isn't replaceable. He's very much in the same vein as Bourne.

I would give him a little extra cash this yr along with some sort of incentives. I would let him walk after this season and development the next dude.

Fans always want to keep everyone if he's played even halfway decent. Some would just pay every player whatever he asks for. Unfortunately the front office has to consider other contracts and how it will affect the team down the road.

Well ... Pearsall and Cowing are no longer rookies are are being pushed to the front from day 1. Kittle isn't going to be kept in to block as much supposedly. CMC is back (and that's BIG). Robinson and Aiyuk are going to come back in the first quarter of the season. Guerendo is going to get some targets. Then the random rookie RB/WR catches that will happen, plus Juice.

Kyle said he wants the ball to be spread out more this year.

Every team does that. The next team that doesn't make mistakes will be the first :)

Walsh made a BUNCH of mistakes.

Ricky Kittle CMC will all command targets.

Kittle had a total of 58 snaps in PBLK last yr, when it's a pass play he's out there running routes.

Love JJ but he's not getting 113 targets this yr.

A SB MVP award doesnt necessarily equate to a big salary extension nevermind almost.

Neither does one above average year of production.

I will ask......do you think the other 31 teams in the NFL would give JJ 17 mill per over 3 years?

To your first point: It doesn't; but my point was that he was the best player on the team on the biggest stage. Better than the two WRs that we gave double what he's asking; better then everyone on our offense.

2nd: Jimmy got paid after 5 games. Deebo had one amazing year; contract year all the same. Armstead. I can go on if you'd like.

3rd: Now this will piss a lot of people off but I can play that game. Do you think 31 other teams would give Brock what the 49ers did?

Okay that's fine; then judge him for his follow up season after that game. Do you think he played better than a 7.5 million dollar WR? Who was the best WR on the team last season? Including the games before Aiyuk went down.

Everyone gotta keep in mind that he isn't asking to be paid like a Lambo in excess of 30 mil per; he asking for half of that.

He's already signed. I guess you mean a pay raise for the year? Not a bad idea. I think a couple million and incentives should do it. Id rather not let him.walk next year but he's gone. Truthfully, I was prepared to lose him after 2023.
