This makes it extremely difficult to trade him, any team acquiring him would NEED $33.06M in cap room to acquire him before they even think of redoing his deal, only way would be for the 49ers to eat some of his salary which makes no sense if they want to avoid as much dead money as possible.

Doesn't this make him untradeable? So that only leaves extending him as an option since releasing him is not one apparently.

It makes it extremely difficult to deal him, any team would NEED $33.06M to acquire him, and that's before they rework his deal, the only way is if the 49ers eat some of his salary, and I can't see them doing that, and a release makes no sense as there's just no one in FA anywhere as good as Trent.

If they had paid the $10M bonus, wouldn't the 49ers have lost all leverage ? Or, do they have any leverage anyway, even without paying it?

I don't even try to pretend that I understand these contracts and negotiations. I just wait until they anounce an agreement or say the player is being traded or released.

Doesn't help that we don't get to see the contracts and are limited to what's reported.

I doubt that many of us would be able to understand all the complexities in todays contracts. Gone are the days when players came in and signed a simple contract that said I agree to play for X amount. With lawyers involved they have to earn their pay by making everything complex. Every move they make now is for legal or monetary reasons.

Lawyers can be dirtbags but if you ever come across a great lawyer - never let him/her go. They're nearly invaluable. Today's contracts have so much more money in them and business opportunities etc. Mo' Money Mo' Problems.

It's not fun but I don't blame teams and/or players from protecting themselves/assets. Players also represent the brand too - which is a big deal for teams. The teams brand is also a big deal for players, in most situations. everything is just much more complex.

This tells me that we are most likely going to work out some sort of extension.

Does anyone have a list of the teams that have enough Cap room to trade for Trent? From what I'm seeing - there's approx 9 teams with enough cap space and a bunch of them we wouldn't condier trading to.
- Titans
- Commanders
- Chargers
- Cardinals (no way)
- Jets
- Seahawks (no way)
- 49ers
- Eagles (no way)
- Patriots (have $33.5M cap available).

if we did exercise it - how much room would a team need in cap space to trade for trent? I figured it would be easier to trade him if we didn't execute the option but sounds like you're saying it's the opposite, interesting.
Make him honor his contract. If he holds out don't pay him. If he reports just before the season opener make him inactive until he's in playing shape. If there's an uncomfortable situation it's on him.

The $10M bonus would have prorated over 5yrs, so now that it gets added to his base salary the 2027 dead money has gone down by $7.5M, and the savings for 2026 goes up to $24.7M.

Since the $10M gets added to his base salary, which was $22.21M, any team would need $33.06M to acquire him, most teams don't have anywhere near that much in cap room.

I don't see any teams that are close enough to winning a SB that they would trade for Williams since he's not going to be playing much longer. He might be great for a team that thinks they can win this season. Chargers but they have 2 good tackles that will both be back this season.
Nobody is trading for TW. It's clear that the 49ers are going to replace him through the draft.
I personally don't care if we resign him or not. Every time this dude runs out of guaranteed money, he holds out and becomes a prima donna.

When have the 49ers replaced anyone on the offensive line in the draft?
