My impression from the reports is that the parties had a deal, but Aiyuk backed out when the other WRs started getting paid more. The 49ers have clearly not responded well to his new posture because the team has not offered more money. I don't think this is a matter of ego or respect, but of precedence and cap planning. I think the team set a number they are willing to pay, and are otherwise fine with him playing out the 5th year option (I think the 5th year option may likely be the 49ers preferred result) to reevaluate its position next year (this assumption that Deebo is gone after the year is overstated). I understand the team feeling swindled by Aiyuk's refusal to follow through with the deal while having little leverage because he's under contract. I also understand Aiyuk wanting as much money as possible. This whole go find a team to do the trade deal is a ploy to get him back to the 49ers either on a new contract or on his 5th year option. The team should only take a trade deal if they 100% get a proper return, otherwise make Aiyuk sit out or play on the 14 mil. Paraag is not emotional and I cannot believe someone with his negotiation experience would let Aiyuk get him on tilt. The team also gave into Bosa because Bosa was worth it - Aiyuk is not. Patience is all that is necessary here.
Just a difficult situation because the team can't afford to keep everyone around. Likewise, whether the 49ers utilize him as a true #1 target or not, or whether they spent money elsewhere and now can't afford to pay him what he's worth is not Aiyuk's problem. It's a crummy situation. If I had my way I'd keep Aiyuk and dump Deebo.
