I still don't understand why our FO doesn't extend guys early instead of waiting until crunch time

I think this is a mutual tactic by agents. The last minute pressure usually means more money for their client, but I do wish it was more straight forward.

You'd better run that by Paraag. If we paid attention we saw we restructured guys and made cap space to rollover to this year in anticipation we'd need to extend our top tier A plus guys and that the cap would grow to give us more space

The recent news is a much apparently bonus for us and it does help in both adding and keeping talent. It's simple math. Arithmetic never lies

Just as Brock's rookie deal had a great effect so too does the salary cap expanding

We don't need cap space to resign BA. This has 0 effect

Because players want to wait.

With Justin Jefferson about to reset the WR market it would be wise to extend him sooner rather than later.

But they always extend the guys they want to keep 1 year before they are Free agents. So the statement is false that we don't.

Deebo
Fred
Bosa
Greenlaw

What player did they tag or let hit free agency?

You're right about time left on contract. I (wrongly?) thought he meant time in the offseason - such as Bosa signing in September.

Players who are still under control always want to wait until the comparable UFAs are signed or traded and extended because they almost always lift the market.

Thats why most of these extensions happen in August.

Crunch time means more $$$, especially after the year BA had.

Only if they get extended. Sometimes guys hold out, don't get extended, come back and don't play well and lose money. See Levon Bell. Don't remember if Ekler held out last season, but he did play as well as he did before. Bosa played better as the season went a long.

So holding out may hurt earnings if he doesn't get extended.

Its not crunch time, it is one year out. The FO excercised the 5th year option at 14 million, The Niners could then in theory frnachise tag him for 22 million, so essentially he is under contract for next two season at 36 million. So this to me shifts the leverage to San Francisco. The only option the player has is to sit out
Lock him up and then decide who is better this year between him and Deebo. Trade one off before the Purdy deal. If Purdy does what he did so far again next year he's gonna be in the 40m range at the very least

With the cap going up this year and next He's going to get way over 40.

I always assumed it was because we were staggering the contracts to stay as cap flexible as we could and avoid a situation where multiple can't lose guys are free agents at the same time.

Agreed. The new cap number news has zero effect.
