Dante Hall did it because he was hot garbage as a receiver. If he couldn't move the needle as a returner, he was out of the league. That's your ideal returner, someone who specializes in that as their primary role and has to be damn good at it or else. Josh Cribbs and Devin Hester are two more examples that never terrified anyone as receivers.
I am a bit leery of Aiyuk returning punts when Deebo is already super injury prone. A player can get injured on any play, so why risk your best talent on low percentage of success plays? I think the people that are Gung ho about it right now might have second thoughts if Deebo goes down, and Aiyuk is injured on a return, now suddenly your top two WRs are Sherfield and Sanu.
