Thanks OTC, if the QB stays healthy I'm looking at 7-11 wins. So let's roll the dice and let the season begin.

Lol, still wouldn't rule out, though. With KS, everyone is a weapon. You know Joe is lobbying for one such play this season!Originally posted by English:Well, no FA losses. The only obvious possible deterioration may be Staley slowing down just a little. The major impact of the would be, no touchdown runs from him.

I want to see this entire season play out before I start having high hopes for the 49ers.
I do actually have a lot of optimism and hope for them RIGHT NOW, but of course you know how it is..........always gotta wait and see, can't judge a team by potential. I can see a 7-10 win season for sure if everyone stays healthy, maybe even more wins. With the winning margins in the modern NFL being so razor thin, QB play and pass rush account for a lot more wins (or losses) than you think. This ain't 1992 when a 4-12 team ain't expected to do s*** (like the Bucs of those days), but funny how many pundits see just that.
But what I think will be most exciting is assuming the team can stay healthy and Jimmy plays the entire season is we'll finally get a real good gauge of how good the 49ers will be over the next few years. If everyone goes as our glass half full fans see it, the next few years should be a lot of fun.
A dress rehearsal season before 2020 when Jimmy returns to Foxboro to remove the throne from his older brother!

Re: depth, I'd like our future grocery clerks demolish the other teams future grocery clerks in pre-season. That's when I know we really do have some depth.
Other than that, I also have high hopes for this season, but until the 3rd game into the regular season, I still don't know what we have in terms of a team. Till then, I'm withholding putting a lot of hope into this season.

Here's a question for some of the "haters". Where have we downgraded our roster? At what position are we worse this year then we were last? Because I can't think of one
We have either stayed the same or have upgraded every position on our team. And some positions have been upgraded immensely (pass rush, WR's, RB's). I also think it's fair to say we upgraded our defensive position coaches (DB, DL).
With that being said, I can't wait to watch Shanahan's offense now that he has his legit QB back and all these hand picked weapons at his disposal.
Very true. Safety we even improved bc of health and depth. Switching Moore back was a great move. I hope he is our starter by next year and a good one at that.

Nicely done, OTC, and thanks.
Two additions.
1. Is it possible Little et al of S &C guys finally tell the HC, "Nope, so and so isn't ready to go back in. He sits another 2 weeks". And, thus....with a massive amount of luck, we finally break the injury bug that has kept someone's foot on our necks most of the last 5-8 yrs.? I would hope now that when an injured guy goes back in it is because he truly is ready for duty. Recall last two yrs, even if S &C knew a guy wasnt ready to play yet, he had to go back in because there was nobody else. How many times did we lose 2nd teamers and have no replacements. OT playing C, G playing OT, OT playing OG and that was just the OL. DBs? Way worse. Corners playing LB, S doing the same...cripes we were so injured the last 5 yrs that it is impossible to believe...and we were there. Oh, and as for ball handlers...at one time we had to hire RBs off the street in front of Walmart. We had none. 2018-19 were yrs to forget. And for a newly minted HC/OC and GM? talk about making your initatiion difficult? Well it was...truly
2. WISH...re: that starting field position of the 31 yd line:
If he really has an end over end punt, that can bounce along the field and then take a 6 ft hop, or he has the "knuckler" that nobody can catch....man that ought to make that 31 yd line horror a thing of the past. Maybe a handful of times i have seen a knuckler punt, almost always in a Candlestick swirling wind, and each time the ball was uncatchable. It is the end over end punt, which mimics an onside kick that is even more fascinating. What must that look like to a PR trying to field an end over end ball bouncing toward him when he knows one of those bounces is going over his head.
Based on these two punting additions, the chances for T.O this yr sure looks promising...in addiition to pushing back the opponent taking the ball on their own 31. I could see that being pushed back inside the 20...easily....and that is a huge move. Don't think PR around the league won't know about the Aussie trick kicks by the time we play them. They will.
A note about opponents getting the ball on their 31. By rights that means that half the time they got it on the 21 and. Half the time they got it on their 41. And about all i recall of last yr is that our opponents kept having a 60 yd field all day long. Obviously some of those were on the 21 but the ones i have an image of in my brain is the 60 yd field that they had and it seemed that went on all game. it didn't but it sure seemed that way.

Optimism is all well and good, especially at this time of year when everyone is 0-0, every draft pick only has upside, and every injury from last year comes back 100%. That last point is actually why I believe that predictions of this sort are not meaningful. Several crucial players are coming back from major season ending injuries, including our starting QB, RB and prize FA from this offseason. Are the chances that ALL of them come back 100% good? Yes, they are. But it is not a certainty. People hedge their bets (like they should) by putting in the disclaimer "if there are no major injuries this year". I also say that you should put a further hedge "if LAST year's injured players come back to their full ability this season".
That's why any prediction for this season should be extremely volatile. The stars could align and we could stroll into the playoffs. But I see an equal chance of us limping to another sub-500 season. Easily.
As for our supposed wonderful coaching edge, well, let's see Shanahan actually produce a consistent winning record first before we crown his ass. At present he is exactly where all the rest of the unproven HCs stand, regardless of whether they had been wonderful coordinators in the past: unproven. "Unproven" is not an edge of any sort.

The Rams are a given to be in the 10+ win zone. The real problem is the Seabags are good again. The niners need 10 wins to have a playoff shot and that will be difficult.
niners are O/U 8
sea O/U 8.5
rams O/U 10.5
cards O/U 5
