My hope is the Niners got 4 starters out of this draft, and 3 pro bowlers, Bosa, Deebo and Punter.

The "we could have got a 3rd string DB or OL in the 4th, rather than an immediate Pro Bowl caliber punter!" takes have to be among the least sensical of the offseason. And I've read the "Polite is elite" takes.

The least sensical, and also the most repeated. But "homers are delusional" lol. And I get that people aren't happy with our secondary. But I like that the FO is giving those young guys another shot to fight for it and earn it and prove themselves. Colbert has shown talent, Spoon has shown talent, Moore has talent, Verret has talent. It's a gamble sure but it's not hard to understand it. And next year we add a blue-chip DB
I wish there was more video of him actually punting the ball. Most clips I see are less than a minute.

Agree but don't forget to add in these guys are finally going to get excellent coaching from Joe Woods. They didn't have that before, and now with the 2nd chances for some and a couple new guys they will ahve all the advantages they need. There were a number of comments on DB coaching last yr but honestly it was abysmal. This yr not so. I think we got 3 good ones, DL, LB, DBs. That plus a yr of experience ...some of these guys are going to make it and have good yrs. And Kwon won't hurt either from his LB spot. All good.

The punters from Australia that have made an NFL roster and started have all been excellent. The niners and the fan base did think highly of Pinion at the time. However, Wish also brings some different traits in his punting that seem unreal in the few videos of him. Like any draft pick, only time will tell. Being older and more mature may help him adjust.

I do think that he has more than pinion did, odds are against anyone else we pick in the forth round having a chance to make an impact on the niners that he can this year or next, in three years that might be different, but that depends on the position and those in front of him. Like Kittle and Taylor, there was really no one in front of them.

The "he's an immediate Pro Bowl punter" take is also a little optimistic, at least. We should probably see him punt in an NFL game before anointing him like that.

it is " he damn well better be an immediate pro bowl punter who mishandles no snaps and kicks every kick out of the end zone punt"

Wishnowsky was a far better punter in college. Pinion was drafted for his upside, big guy with a big leg that could boom it but was inconsistent. Wishnowsky was Mr Consistency.

All i'm saying is the same folk were saying the same things about pinion to justify his draft position. Its all right there. Go read the thread. Nobody knows how he will do. But he better be a top 5 punter within the next 2 years to justify blowing a fourth on him.

You should read that thread and how much you supported that pick and you are basically argue with yourself here.

As an aussie, and one who was pushing his barrow since before the draft, pumping the brakes a bit on the guy until we see his contribution in real games is justified imho.

However, I'll not hold the early pick against him or the FO (I was surprised as hell it was this early), but there was a need, they ID'd the guy they wanted and got him, regardless of draft number.
From what has been said here in various places, a 4th for any position is a crapshoot and essentially not worth getting your titties in a twist.

Demanding he become probowl/allpro or top x of position else it's a blown pick, is just like putting your money on the table at the casino and expecting to see it again. You might be lucky, but it is a little naive. Conversely if you don't put money on the table, don't expect to win.

As Y2R has said, "nobody knows how he'll do", but the promise is there just like for Deebo, Hurd, Bosa all of whom may 3 yrs from now be considered blown picks. But the promise is there, which is all that some of us need until th games begin.

Just because it wasn't a glamourous pick, doesn't make it a poor one.

That said, trying for 150 pages by end of preseason. Who is in?

Good post. I think with Make@wish, special teams will be a strength this year. We shall see.

I'm not sure how you drew that connection but no. It was just a play on a term we've used a lot in here for years.

Good post Hayne. Yeah, when the player himself was completely floored he went that high, no need to justify the pick. It was clearly too high BUT, all that matters now is that he is a terrific player. Once that happens, the value talk will go away. Besides, this is more of a symbol for how the FO operates more than anything. We all love Wish and hope he 'kicks' ass.
