No urgency with this front office, reminds me of the Trent Dilfer signing a few years back and how each week it was, will he sign, did he sign or OMG Trent signed and is now our starting QB

I wish the league had a rule where if you drafted a guy, that a percentage of their salary cap hit didn't count against the cap. I hate how in the NFL and NBA, you're eventually punished if you draft and develop well. I think they should do something where teams have extra ability to keep their guys.

one thing I think the game is missing these days, are players being on a team for a long time. Maybe it's just me, but I enjoy it when a guy is on the team longer and drafted by those guys. Guys like Joe Staley. makes winning so much sweeter to me.

This. 100%, and is something I've wished for as well. You draft well and that talent then develops well, you should receive some sort of break against the cap when it comes to re-signing that talent for big $ since it's homegrown (you scouted it, you picked it, and you helped develop it).

The Niners fortunately have done a good job of keeping most of their talented, homegrown core together despite the limitations from the cap. Hopefully soon for Bosa, too.

Yeah those contract negotiations with Dilfer were pretty stressful times for a 49er fan.

Your right. why should I care about affordability or team cap or really the unbalance of wealth in general.

Give him 40 mill for 10 years guaranteed. sign and let's go!

Your exaggerated terms aside… star players at premium positions cost top dollar. We can make the choice to play hardball in the hopes of saving a few bucks or getting a few favorable clauses in the contract, but there's risks involved. There's also risks involved in paying him, including losing other talent when it's their time to be paid.

The way to navigate this is to be successful in the draft and free agency, and make prudent decisions on who is essential to the team. A premium pass rusher is the second most important spot on an NFL roster, only behind QB.

2nd most important but we are without a second QB contract. Give it to him. Back up the Brinks truck. Let's go. What Bosa wants, he get!

NFLPA and agents would never allow or want this because in the end its all about the $, from the owners to 99% of the players. You will get the occasional Tom Brady every 30 years who doesn't want top dollar because he wants to win, and is popular enough to tell the union to kiss what he cant etc.

They must be at an impasse.

Or don't, and significantly hamper your chances of winning a SB. So you can sign a couple other guys who are much less important and are much easier replaced.

Again, choices to make. We're two years away from having to pay a QB, ideally.

Maybe it's gamesmanship, they've already agreed to the contract but are waiting until the 11th hour to sign it to catch Pittsburgh off guard.

it would add some more heart and soul back into the game, instead of it being sucked out over the last 20 years. the commissioner has done a good job making the league money but I feel like the product has suffered over the last 10-15 years. like I said, maybe it's just me, but I'd like to see more team loyalty from the players and I feel like the team who drafted you (or has had you for 3+ years) has the ability to pay you what you deserve and it not cripple the salary cap.

I personally wonder whether the Yorks would even support such a rule.

I don't think we want to be in a position where deep pockets from ownership can have a real effect on the quality of the team. It's not the DeBartolo Niners anymore.

As an aside, stepping back as a Niners fan, I also think parity in the league is good. It doesn't take years to go from good to bad and bad to good and that makes for a more entertaining product… for me at least.

I don't think they ever re-signed Dilfer to a new contract. They traded for him.
