I know we have a lot of draftniks around here, and I appreciate that. However, the last several years have really salted me on the value of the draft. Every year we get all worked up over these young kids coming out of college. We line them up, size them up and analysis them every which way to Sunday. And then the draft. Shortly there after, reality sets in. Withing a small window, it becomes painfully obvious that we didn't just draft the next Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders or Ronnie Lott. Moreover, we likely didn't even draft a pro bowl player, let alone a All Pro. Even when we do, the Niners have an incredible knack for drafting players with psychological issues, the injury bug or some other weird hang up. Below is a list of all the promising talent we've lost and or waited for over the years due to unforeseen and possibly undetectable issues.
Aldon Smith - addict
Chris Borland - CTE
Reuben Foster - DV
Eric Reid - protests
Colin Kapernick - protests
Arik Armstead - pillow soft
Jimmy Ward - Health issues
The point of the list above isn't to call out our drafting or the GM, but rather to acknowledge our drafts in the early rounds and how they've been such a huge let down. So while I plan to watch the 1st and 2nd rounds of the draft this year, my expectations of drafting a game changing player is pretty low. That's why I've been a little disengaged this year.
There's got to be a lesson in here somewhere, and maybe it has to do with our higher draft picks Rd 1 or 2. Not sure about ward or Reid but thot they were higher picks. The message with Reuben is:
if you see a flag, ok. Acknowledge it. I
If you see 2 flags , ask yourself "do you really want this kid?"
IIf you see 3 flags, then you probably are on the wrong track.
If you go back and look at his film and it says, "take him"....ok, now yo should realize you are in trouble. If you take him, it better not be high. Make it end of 5th or 6th.
If he goes undrafted towards end of first and you say, damn this kid is just too good to pass on, and you get ready to pull the trigger, reread the previous sentence.
Oops, it went off in your hand before you could throw that grenade...now you are truly fkcued. Shoulda waited til the end of 5th or 6th.
But he'd be gone by then, you say.
Yup...and then where would we be?
Well, one effing lot better off than we are now.
