Anybody else thinking that Sherm could make the move to FS next year? Not complaining about his play not even saying his play has dropped off. Just thinking that he could solidify the middle of the field at that 3rd level more than any other option not named thomas.

very low chance, he is still playing well at CB. We will add more to FS I'm sure.

Agreed.

Kick rocks. The both of ya

Yeah because having guys switch positions has worked out so well for us. Have you watched 1 game this season?

Instead of trying to be a smart ass, keep in mind sherman has considered the idea himself.

he was kidding when he said that.

You and Saleh related?

If you play QB in the NFL long enough, you're going to get hit. If you look around the league OL play in general is down across the board. Look at the QB hits and sacks allowed stat posted weekly in here. It's not exclusive to SF.

THIS IS NOT A REFERENDUM ON ME SAYING "THE LINE IS FINE, WE DON'T NEED BETTER GUARDS AND A JOE STALEY REPLACEMENT."

All else considered equal, I'd rather have great tackles, a smart QB that gets the ball out quickly, and fast WRs that get open quick. Even though the cap keeps going up it's just not economically feasible to field a Pro Bowl team.

Normally I'd agree if we were at least in the middle of the pack and didn't have 2 quick release QB's as further evidence but this is an insane number of QB hits and being 3rd in false starts is also evidence we're struggling even at pre snap. We'll probably blow by Houston after facing the Bears and Rams fronts.

Maybe we need to dive into all the reasons why this is (not just the OL).

Wow. I knew we were bad but that's really bad. Any idea how those numbers break down by games? Assuming Beathard tends to hold the ball longer vs games with Garropolo/Mullens quicker release and decision making, were the majority on Beathard or do we know if the 3 QB's were all hit the same % wise per dropbacks?
Either they need to make moves to improve protection or leave Beathard at QB to absorb the hits (poor guy) and become a run only team. Whhhhat's Jimmy Raye up to now days?

i think we need to leave either the FB or RB in to block more....

Legit point. It's a catch 22. If you leave in a TE and/or FB to block, you leave less receivers out in the routes. We did that quite a bit with JG and our receivers were really struggling.

I saw that Shane Ray has been benched and inactive for games in Denver and they aren't picking up his 5th year option allowing him to walk this offseason. He's only had 14 sacks in 4 years but had 4 his first year and then 8 his second season. One sack his third season and with Chubb there now, he has only had one this season. I'm sure there will be better FA options but I imagine this is the caliber of player we will sign this off season. Has to be better than Marsh though, no?

That would be my list.

Center...man, I've been thinking about that one a lot today. Just WAY too many hits on all 3 QB's this year and no excuse as we're a top 10 rushing team, play action and 2 of the 3 QB's have a quick release.

Me too. He was easily the worst player on the field yesterday, and has had a really bad season overall. I really hope he can turn it around but he is so bad this year that I think we need to look for his replacement. That free agent contract makes me want to bash my head into the wall at this point.

And Tomlinson is such as average G as well. Person is 31 and unsigned. And we need a developmental LT this year to learn from Staley before to rides off into the sunset. Yikes. Run blocking is really nice but...

Well, everyone is dancing around the OL thing but here are the cold, hard, facts. Kyle is obviously wedded to the ZBScheme. That is, his OL is great at run blocking but looking at the QB hits, (plus pull tape on any game and watch our QBs get rammycackled), and you see an OL that can't do pass pro. To most folks, really poor pass pro leads to the inevitable QB injury. GRanted JimmyG's injury was NOT The result of poor OL blocking. He was unwisely just trying to gain a few more yards in a losing effort of a game. That said, the gross # of QB hits leads directly to QB injury. One would think that blowing $137 mil on your QB ...would lead GM/HC to protect his azz. And obviously that has not happened.

What this boils down to is the best playcaller in the NFL has to have his ZBS be tip-top at the expense of adequate QB protection. Doesn't seem to be a quandary for kyle, altho he has gotten a taste of what missing your FR QB can do to yor W/L record as well as the overall production of the team. With a healthy QB we do way better than with JG on the sidelines and CJ our Qb. As luck would have it , kyle/john picked a dandy 3rd string QB who is very obviously our #2...and who knows in the future. Thing is kyle and john have minimized QB protection to emphasize ZBS and a great running game.

Question: if that is the case, how do we fix that? Kyle wants ZBS first, second and foremost. And that comes at the expense of offering his QBs up at the alter of being injured. So how in the heck do we fix something that our HC is definitely the cause of/ or force behind? This is kyle's Philosophy and he obviously isnt primarily concerned about keeping his QB safe. ZBS is always his first goal. Somebody offer up a solution....please?

Oh, and the obvious fact that kyle's ZBS success in the run game sets up his spectacular passing game... well, one sets up the other...but QB protection therefore gets short shrift.

Put another way, QB protection is low man on the totem pole....or a sacrifice for the mind blowing ZBS run/pass game. How the f***can we fix that?

If we were to keep 3 QB's on the roster would CJ be in the mix or are we done with him?

KS likes him, but we'd probably add a 4th to compete. Probably a UDFA.

No way to tell this early. After the draft we would have a much clearer idea man.
