Yes. Our running back room is in shambles.

We will need to draft an RB next year. McKinnon should not be relied on coming off an ACL, but I am sure Shanahan will bat for his guy and think differently.

Hyde wouldn't come back on a one year deal. Signing him meant having a RB that doesn't fit for years to come.

Game Assessment:

Unfortunately, what cost us a W today was exactly what cost us W's last year. Crucial penalties, injuries, tons of drops, undisciplined, poor tackling, RZ offense, defenders with their backs to the QB and drops of their own...right down to the wrong cleats.

Big Picture:

We're good enough to stay in these games now despite all of these perpetual issues.

Next Step:

We've GOT to learn how to win as a team by not shooting ourselves in the foot. Rinse. Repeat.

Great post

The questions that arise.....Is this a coaching issue and are we overrating the Niners' coaching staff? IMHO, the difference between the Viking and the Niners in this game was discipline...or lack thereof. The Vikings made very few mistakes and the Niners made several crucial ones. I would also question whether Kyle has a coherent plan for the red zone... I wasn't real thrilled with the play calling in the RZ in the Viking game...

The good news is that overall, the NIners only had 3 penalties so they showed a lot of improvement in that area from their preseason games. In addition, they made good halftime adjustments and missed far fewer tackles in the second half. Also, their top rookie draft choices played well.

So...are the Vikings more talented than the Niners or just more disciplined? I would say the latter. The Niners would have won this game if not for a couple of horrendous plays and if they just could have caught the ball better, they may have won the game easily. How can the NIners get more disciplined? That, to me, is the real question.

Cheers!

Fair question! You won't find a bigger fan boy of Kyle (or Mike) Shanahan than me...OK, maybe Niners816.

You are spot on IMHO, that discipline was the biggest factor in that loss. The Vikings looked and played like a veteran squad and aside from that one fumble, didn't make another mistake. Conversely, we looked like a young, undisciplined team that found several creative ways to lose. But the reality is that that's where both clubs are at today. Their defense has been the same and played together for years. Their HC is a stickler for discipline. Cousins is a smart QB who's not going to hurt you. Meanwhile, our team is still very young and still learning HOW to win and be more disciplined.

But we also forget that both Lynch and Shanahan are green too. You've seen some of my posts about personnel decisions with Lynch. My post above talks about a number of reoccurring theme's from this game that seemed to carry over from last year.

So the Vikings are a better team, a deeper team but it took a very disciplined game to beat this young upstart 49ers who constantly shot themselves in the foot.

Lynch, Kyle and this young team are still learning...how to win. But when they do, look out!
Discipline goes hand in hand with understanding and perfecting your job. I expect them to improve through the year and tackling had better improve...a lot!

Can't leave me out I loved the Shanahan hire, and have come to love the Lynch hiring.

Good call on tackling too!
Tackling has been a problem for this team the last several years. It feels like after harbaugh left they do not know how to properly wrap up and finish a play.

I can stand the turnovers and jimmy gunslinging all the way as it gives us the chance for many more long gains, either via catch or penalty, which have been lacking in our favor for quite some time.

I think tackling and cutting down penalties are by far the 2 biggest challenges that shanahan has to polish in order to make this team a contender again.

Oh yes, there was a contingency here of fans quite a while back clamoring for a Mike + Kyle combo. I love Lynch too. But like they said, they haven't proved anything yet; and will certainly make mistakes along the way and grow themselves. And I'm looking forward to the ride.

Not leaving anyone out, AB.... Glad to hear both you and NC are on the same page. I'm excited for the future of this franchise too....but I do think that both Shanny and Lynch do have some learning to do...as does this current coaching staff...

Still....it should be a really fun ride (as NC says)...

Cheers!

I'll add my endorsement to this!
Some updated numbers for you NC

Injury Settlements:

Max McCaffrey $177,882
Malcolm Johnson $115,588
Terrell Williams Jr. $106,765
Joe Williams $64,059

Before knowing Burbridge's number, we're $37,117,342 under the cap(roughly), and if carried over, we'd have $65,419,090 for 2019, before cuts like Watson, Mitchell, and Marsh.
