Hey AB....forgive me if you have addressed this question before but I'm curious....where do you the team has improved (or gotten worse) in their position groups from last year? If you could give us a very quick assessment perhaps rating the groups "very improved, improved, stayed the same, gotten a little worse, gotten a lot worse", that would be great. I know we aren't even into the regular season yet but what the hell... Cheers!
LT, it depends on how far you want to go back. From our roster this time last year or from the end of last season to today? Here's the end of last year compared to (vs.) now. What do you think?

Special Teams:

P: Bradley Pinion vs. Bradley Pinion
OK AB... I actually was referring to the roster at this time last year...because injuries, as we all know, are a wild card, and can resolve over time (example: Garcon, M Smith)...
Here is my breakdown...
QB - Improved, mainly because of the fact that JImmy has had an entire off season now to learn the offense and work on his mechanics, particularly on long passes. Very improved compared to the beginning of last year for obvious reasons.
RB - Stayed the same, mainly due to the injury to McK. I do think that the addition of Morris and the experience that Breida has now has brought the position up to the level of last year's. I would put this in the "improved" category were it not for Morris' limitations in the passing / receiving game, even with McK's injury.
WR - Very improved, mainly due to the additions of Pettis and R James.
OT - Improved, because of the new life that Staley has and the improved depth. McG, although still developing in pass pro, appears to be a stud in the run game.
OG - Very improved, mainly due to the familiarity with the offense. Tomlinson, Garnett and Person all have experience in the offense now. Last year, it was a learning process for all involved and the talent was lacking.
C - Very improved. Richburg was Kyle's pick for C, as opposed to Kilgore. Also, the team has much better depth now with both Person and Mags able to play C.
TE - Improved (but only slightly) - Kittle's year in the offense is the main reason for this but it remains to be seen if he can stay on the field.
LDE - Improved. because of the addition of J Taylor
NT - Improved. because of the year of experience for DJ Jones
RDT - Improved. because of the year of experience for both guys. Very improved from the beginning of last year with the addition of Day.
LEO - Improved, because of the year of experience for Thomas
SAM - Stayed the same, because of the fact that Nzeocha is new to a starting position
MIKE - Improved, because Warner does not play like a rookie and Foster actually did at times.
WILL - Stayed the same, if Foster is put in this position from last year because of Lee's experience but just barely. Not a big M Smith fan. Both the MIKE and WILL are improved when both Warner and Foster are on the field together.
RCB - Very improved because D Johnson is no longer with the team
SCB - Improved, mainly due to depth (DJ Reed can play here too)
LCB - Very improved, because of Sherman's addition and better depth overall
FS - Improved, due to better depth and the year in the system for Colbert
SS - Stayed the same / Gotten worse.. Even with the year of experience in the system for Tartt, there is little depth here. Last year, Tartt was backing up Reid.
Special Teams....Very improved in the return game, particularly with regards to depth and slightly worse in the kicking game due to age.
OK....there you have it, AB. Your thoughts, sir?
Cheers!

Thanks NC, but...well...of course we all have our take, so...I'll muddy the water as usual! My additions are best hope worst fear type of range. Range is 10 perfect improvement, 0 is none, negative #s imply a backwards move. Also, this is from TC last year til now.

Improvement over last year = Arrow Up
Stayed the same = Even
Decline = Arrow Down
QB: Arrow Up (9.9--8 JG starting the year after a half year and a TC)
RB: Even (-2 until we see how Morris and Breida do in games)
FB: Even (2 experience can't hurt and he seems to be healthy)
TE: Even (3 experience in the system and with JG--more than FB because he was a veteran, Kittle and Wick are young)
XWR: Arrow Up (depth) (10 added special playmakers and a healthy Garcon, kept Bourne and Taylor...best group since? Rice and Taylor?)
SWR: Arrow Up (depth) (see above)
ZWR: Arrow Up (see above)
LT: Even (agree unless age is catching up with Staley. His relationship as a mentor to McG may rejuvenate his game)
LG: Even (2 experience should help, as will health)
C: Arrow Up (5 no need for explanation)
RG: Even (3 experiene)
RT: Arrow Up / Even with Trenton Brown (-2 until McG has some games under his belt)
Defensive Personnel:
I'll leave defense alone as it is so unknown! Will Foster do something else that eliminates him from future games? Is Warner strong enough for the NFL? Is Sherman really healthy enough to play the year? Will pass rush by committee be better this year? Will be fun to watch.

Hey NC...thanks for chiming in... I did take into account the injuries when I put together my take on the overall position by position comparison with the roster from the beginning of last year. I appreciate your takes.... Now that you've seen mine, do you still have the same takes?
Cheers, mate!

Thanks for playing guys; fun exercise. dtg, I like your idea about a point scale and LT, you followed a similar path adding further details as to the degree of change one way or another. Obviously, all three of us feel like we've improved the roster from this time last year, no doubt. That's the exciting part. Injuries, once again, are going to play a big factor in the degree to which we approve between now and week 17. But as long as we protect JG, we should be able to be very competitive in any game on our schedule, at least. Give 80% of the WZ feel we'll win at least 9 games, it's safe to say, they too feel like we've improved over the past 12 months.
If you'd like me to expand upon your points, lemme know.

Well AB, time to rethink ours with the updates that Magnuson and Watson are out and Malcolm Smith is unlikely.
My guess: Erik Magnuson, Malcolm Smith, Matt Tobin, Shon Coleman, Jullian Taylor & Tarvarius Moore
The #49ers have 52 players on their roster, so they need to deactivate only six players tomorrow, 90 minutes before kickoff.
