San Francisco 49ers Fan Drops Dead At Game Inside Blazing Hot Levi's Stadum

A San Francisco 49ers fan died at Levi's Stadium on Sunday during the third quarter of the preseason game against the Denver Broncos. ABC News reports that the 49ers fan died of an apparent heart issue despite the efforts of paramedics who tried to revive him during the game inside the newly opened stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

The fan, whose name has not been released, was sitting in a hot, sun drenched area of the stadium where temperatures reportedly reached well into the 80s. The high temps forced many fans to leave the stadium long before the game ended. San Jose Mercury News reports that while there is no confirmation that the San Francisco 49ers fan's death was due to the heat, teams officials stated that there were an "unusually high number of calls for emergency services" during Sunday's game.

As has been said many times, no one - not a single person before the stadium opened in all the fandom or all of Northern California - expected that particular searingness/seemingly magnified focus of the heat. It was unpredictable and unprecedented. Fans go to baseball games in 105-100 degree weather every summer and have for decades. This was 20 degress *less* than that and yet seemed worse to many. Who can predict that?

They probably could have spoken to an expert. I am guessing they didn't or if they did the expert was ignored.

According to one expert, an architectural engineer with extensive experience building sports venues, the 49ers blew it by not addressing the sun issue when they designed Levi's Stadium.

"Gosh, it's just such a missed opportunity for them," said the expert, who requested anonymity. "We do buildings where we do 'thermal-comfort analysis.' It's a very robust computer model that looks at all environmental aspects to determine what the comfort level is inside the building. It would have been so easy to have done that and find out: 'In the fall months, you have no wind, and the sun is beating down on you, here's how it's going to feel.'

"They made a decision to say, 'All right, fine, we're going to let those (fans) bake,' and that's what happened."

First, he has no idea if that's what happened. For all we know the 49ers were never even made aware this process existed. Additionally, this was in 2009-2010. Was this a common practice among all architectural firms at that time? Or was this something now common five years later when this interview occurred? Who's to say the firm didn't do this - maybe they did and it was wrong and said it would be fine. Maybe someone didn't enter the variables of the area correctly into the model. It took me a minute to consider possible other scenarios where this was done out of simple error or lack of process than vindictiveness and greed.

There's a myriad of reasons it could have occurred the way it did. Being cheap and wanting to alienate fans by killing them with heat is the cynical scenario for those who imagine Jed as Mr. Burns, so that of course *must* be the only possibility. You guys honestly believe Jed saw this proposal and rejected it and said aloud in an evil Mr. Burns voice "Let them all suffer and die under the heat of the almighty sun to watch my games!!!" If that was really the case they woukd have installed locks and chains and had no venues to visit on that side of the field, and perhaps also slit every 10th customers throat to drink their blood.

I think Jed decided to recycle a stadium design that was made for candlestick point in Santa Clara because he's cheap.

Yeah...Didn't one of the Florida teams already solve this issue?

They probably will at some point. It'll probably take 1-2 years to construct because of limitations of scheduling, height zoning restrictions, weight dispersal, sightlines, making sure wind can't effect it. They have to get contruction permits at a time where Santa Clara has decided they are the enemy business of the area and may not be willing to work with them. They may have to remove/close large sections of seats on a temporary basis during the season and factor in the effect that will have on those ticket holders who won't be able to go to games during that time. The whole project could cost $100-300m.

Gonna be done tomorrow, I hear.

That was a $425 million dollar renovation.

Or maybe he simply liked the design? I mean, I prefer it over most of the new age spaceship stadiums, so it's certainly possible. It looks like a place to play football, not explore Mars.

By spending $350-425m (granted they also made other changes Levi's wouldn't require) and removing 10,000 seats. It occurred in three phases (partly due to the Marlins being there when they started), and the main renovation took about 1.5 years. It likely helped tremendously that it was in Florida, which is a far more forgiving state for construction regulations. They also renovated a stadium that was mirrored on each side without a difference in height, something Levi's isn't.

Guido on the "insider podcast" has said it's "impossible" to add shade to Jeds Stadium....ownership is still playing games with the fans...
It will take a dallas cawwwboy fan to die for Jerry to add shade to Levis stadium...
Good thing it is a later start.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the firm that built the Trop in Tampa also built Levi's Stadium.
