It's not embarrassing to see what appears to be a half empty stadium in TV every game? Opposing fans must think our fans are a joke.

They do. Because we earn our Whiner mocking.

Not really comparing that all fans have to go through weather in all sports. Ours seems to be the only ones that can't handle mother nature.
maybe they should stick to basket ball or hockey games..

I wonder if they have had the place blessed since this poor soul lost his life at the first game at the stadium?

San Francisco 49ers Fan Drops Dead At Game Inside Blazing Hot Levi's Stadum

A San Francisco 49ers fan died at Levi's Stadium on Sunday during the third quarter of the preseason game against the Denver Broncos. ABC News reports that the 49ers fan died of an apparent heart issue despite the efforts of paramedics who tried to revive him during the game inside the newly opened stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

The fan, whose name has not been released, was sitting in a hot, sun drenched area of the stadium where temperatures reportedly reached well into the 80s. The high temps forced many fans to leave the stadium long before the game ended. San Jose Mercury News reports that while there is no confirmation that the San Francisco 49ers fan's death was due to the heat, teams officials stated that there were an "unusually high number of calls for emergency services" during Sunday's game.

As has been said many times, no one - not a single person before the stadium opened in all the fandom or all of Northern California - expected that particular searingness/seemingly magnified focus of the heat. It was unpredictable and unprecedented. Fans go to baseball games in 105-100 degree weather every summer and have for decades. This was 20 degrees *less* than that and yet seemed worse to many. Who can predict that?

Lulz

I'll never sit in the sun again at Levi's unless it's cooler weather. Preseason game was rough.

What expert was gonna suggest this particular problem? There are literally dozens of open air baseball and football stadiums in the bay area, and none of them ever had this particularly odd combination of heat intensity at lower temperatures. If I tell you the average early Fall temperature in Santa Clara is mid-80s, does anyone think "man, what unbearable heat". Of course not! Because mid-80s is damn nice weather.

It's simply a weird anomoly that has to be reckoned with for now. They've sought to limit afternoon games in the pre-season and early regular season, have done some preliminary explorations of awning options (which as I said above are not as simple as some think), have made attending fans aware of hydration and wearing skin-protective clothing, etc. If it's not enough for you I don't know what they are expected to do about it. Maybe those seats aren't for you?

I think it is a byproduct of having the experts design a stadium for Candlestick Point.
I am happy they are looking into options for shade.

Generally, a mechanical services engineer. And these days, on something of this scale, it should all have been modelled, based upon the conditions at the site.

No excuses for getting this sort of thing wrong.

You can't account for every contingency. As far as I know, this particular lower temperature / higher perceived heat phenomenon had never been experienced in the thousands of open air stadiums for baseball, football, track, tennis etc. throughout the world. I've never heard 85 degrees described as "unbearable heat" in the history of human sports before Levi's. An expert was gonna predict that? I just don't find that plausible.

According to one expert, an architectural engineer with extensive experience building sports venues, the 49ers blew it by not addressing the sun issue when they designed Levi's Stadium.

"Gosh, it's just such a missed opportunity for them," said the expert, who requested anonymity. "We do buildings where we do 'thermal-comfort analysis.' It's a very robust computer model that looks at all environmental aspects to determine what the comfort level is inside the building. It would have been so easy to have done that and find out: 'In the fall months, you have no wind, and the sun is beating down on you, here's how it's going to feel.'

"They made a decision to say, 'All right, fine, we're going to let those (fans) bake,' and that's what happened."

First, he has no idea if that's what happened. For all we know the 49ers were never even made aware this process existed. Additionally, this was in 2009-2010. Was this a common practice among all architectural firms at that time? Or was this something now common five years later when this interview occurred? Who's to say the firm didn't do this - maybe they did and it was wrong and said it would be fine. Maybe someone didn't enter the variables of the area correctly into the model. It took me a minute to consider possible other scenarios where this was done out of simple error or lack of process than vindictiveness and greed.

There's a myriad of reasons it could have occurred the way it did. Being cheap and wanting to alienate fans by killing them with heat is the cynical scenario for those who imagine Jed as Mr. Burns, so that of course *must* be the only possibility. You guys honestly believe Jed saw this proposal and rejected it and said aloud in an evil Mr. Burns voice "Let them all suffer and die under the heat of the almighty sun to watch my games!!!" If that was really the case they woukd have installed locks and chains and had no venues to visit on that side of the field, and perhaps also slit every 10th customers throat to drink their blood.
