Forgive me, but I admit I was a big fan of Baalke about 5 years ago. However, it is apparent now that he had inherited a very talented team from the previous regime and made a few tweaks with good FA signings to put this team (with Harbaugh at the helm) in the running for a few years. In retrospect, he was a terrible evaluator of draft talent at many positions and was too rigid with his tenets of only building through the draft with homegrown talent. Not to mention his weird fascination with ACL projects. I agree with a lot of his theories, but he was apparently too obtuse to ever pull back from his positions and re-evaluate his approach to FA and the draft. With all of that said, I feel like we owe a slight bit of thanks to Baalke for where we are today. It would have been very reasonable, during the impending disasters of the Tomsula or Kelly eras, for him to spend wildly on players in FA to try to grasp onto something that might eventually save his job. Thankfully, he did not. For whatever reason, and I doubt it was for the good of the franchise long-term, he chose to not waste the team's money (aside from the odd extension to V. MacDonald right before his exit). Had Baalke gone on a wild spending spree to make something out of nothing, we could have been seriously hamstrung as an organization right now. Instead, we have had the ability to sign our franchise QB to a record setting contract and are still 3RD in the league in available cap space to continue to fill holes. Because of those down years, JL and KS have the ammunition to the build a winner here. Had Baalke panicked blindly and tried to sign old, high priced FAs in a desperate attempt to save his own skin, then we certainly would not be in the position we are today. I'm glad he is gone, but I for one am very thankful to him for not treating our cap as a piggy bank to try to right his multiple years of bad drafting. Thank you, Trent Baalke.

Another one of my favorite Baalke strategies: Pass on a #1 WR when the draft is loaded with them. Nevemind, he did draft AJ Jenkins. Lol.
