interior o-line is obviously the biggest need for this team. They have their franchise QB and they can illafford for him to get hurt.

But, does anyone have an actual off season plan...plan A and B?

Who wants to play FO?

I was watching the last drive of the Titans, and Marsh looked really good paired with Solomon on stunts. I don't know why Saleh didn't dial in more stunts unless he was scared of Mariota's mobility and scrambling ability. Marsh got close a sack a couple of times. Aaron Lynch was able to bull rush decently. Sad that the whole defense is credited with only one sack the entire game. 26 sacks this entire season for the 49ers - good for 24th in the league. Yech. Compare that with the Jags at 51 sacks for the year. Yeesh!

Umm yeah an offense that only scored 14 points gave up a ton of pressure, and played to the defenses strength. I would say the offense was to blame.

Now i check the box score. Moss was tarhetted 12 times with only 5 catches, and brady was sacked 5 times for 37yds(that is some big dropbacks).

Now do they need to add certain types on offense, yes. But protecting the QB and getting to the QB makes SB winners. Look at the bucs, their skill positions are ridiculous. Now look at the eagles, theirs are cast offs from 2 of the worst 3 teams last year.

The niner WRs can attack all 3 levels, their RBs can run, blitz pick up, and run routes. The TEs maybe lack at blocking, but everything else is plus.

The tackles are stout. The weaknes is the interior line. They NEED to sign a center, draft a center, and draft a guard. Then maybe a tackle, but that is not a need it is a luxury.

Now on D, they do have a lot of holes. But much like a tom brady, a von miller patches those holes. So ER is the #1need on D. afyer that it is a toss up on stud LBer vs stud CB, but they need depth/starter help at LBer way more than corner.

My list is

#1 an edge rusher, preferrably a good run defender.

#2 center. All pro level, be JGs jeff saturday. This person needs to be a FA signing, someone who is not on a NFL learning curve.

#3 guard. An all pro level, one that fits the scheme. Draft is the likely place for this guy.

#4 is a LBer. Type Does not really matter, just someone to go with foster.

#5 is a corner. A great ball guy, someone who is dangerous to throw towards.

Then #6 is a red zone target. This could be a 6ft 7in TE or a 6ft 4in WR.

All of this can be achieved this offseason. But likely in 2.
The ER could be the hardest. Or the easiest.

A good DC that can dial a blitz can cover up the need for a #1 edge rusher...Saleh unfortunately is not that guy. It also doesn't help that he's awful when it comes to player rotation and utilizing his depth.
Kyle has said multiple times that the reason he likes this defensive scheme is that it forces offenses to put together 8-10 play drives to score. Becoming a defense that blitzes will compromise the 'bend don't break' philosophy. If this was a Cover1 scheme (man coverage), then the argument that a shutdown CB is priority #1 would hold water. But since it's a Cover3 scheme, rush 4, drop 7 is what this defense wants to do.

Totally agree....I mean lord Fangio's D never blitz and everyone wants him here.

Fangio wasn't a big blitzer but when he did it worked.

That blitz from Bowman flying up the gut to take down Wilson in the 2013 NFCC was sick.

31 year old coming off a torn Achilles...

This. He might never be the same again.

And as much as I hate signing Sherman, the absolute worst thing ever would be for him to sign with us and be less than mediocre getting burnt left and right, now that he's no longer coached to cheat.

Bad idea signing Sherman - not only coming off an Achilles, but also diminishing skills.

the niners will probably be picking between 6-7 range. I agree that Chubb is a good defenisve lineman prospect. (unlike last year's colossal bust)

Definitely, got to concentrate on the OL - either the draft or FA.

Who is this colossal bust?

That's pretty close to the list I would make. I'd make center (agree on FA - hopefully there is one) the #1 priority and ER #2. Agree on the rest of your list. I also agree that it's probably going to take at least two seasons to get very good players in all of those positions.

Sorry to come to this party so late, but back to the article in the OP: That is a very sophomoric approach to the need issue - better pass defense.

So, yes, a single shut down corner will take care of the other team's #1 receiver, but what does that do for the rest of the secondary?

A stud ER that can consistently cut down the coverage time by .75 to 1 second will make the entire secondary look much better. Instead of having to cover for 4-5 seconds, as has been the case too often, if that time is reduced to 2.5-3 seconds a lot of good things can happen in the secondary.

Just like a good QB can make the rest of the offense look much better, the same can be said for an ER.

Now, go find some OL help and playmakers on offense.

Brick-by-brick.

The problem is, we don't fully know Saleh's philosophy here. Clearly, he's going with the bigger lineups on the front end. They are getting a lot of QB pressures but are one of the slowest teams at getting home and even worse at closing. If this is his preferred lineup, then getting a shut down CB would allow more coverage sacks and an extra second for the big boys to close the deal and not sacrifice anything on run defense.

If his philosophy is he'd rather have speed constantly coming off the edges and at the 3T and feels it wouldn't sacrifice much, if any in run defense, then an ER would be his priority.

Right now, I'm not sure what his preference is. I know what mine is...most fans...

Agreed to a point. Our scheme with emphasis most teams have on quick timing based passes really makes the most dominant pass rushers disappear for portions of games. The Broncos have Von Miller, Shaq Barrett and Shane Raye with far better corners and their defense has looked pedestrian this year. While last year their defense was incredible. Our biggest need imo is a new D coordinator
