Building an offensive line

A lot of our offensive deficiencies stem from our OL. We are good at both left and right tackle, and I liked magnuson coming out of college. Outside of those 3, it really is a crapshoot. Joshua Garnett is the wildcard.

Luckily, there are some decent options coming up in the next off season.

Justin Pugh, G. Weston Richburg, C. Corey Linsley, C are all set to hit free agency and would instantly start on our offense. Tom Compton, OT is also hitting FA, and would be an upgrade as backup swing tackle.

In the draft, we have 5 picks in the top 100. There are about 6-8 tackles currently being projected in the top 50. I personally like Trey Adams. Then there's Connor Williams who fits the description, but he did get injured. I'm intrigued by Brown, mainly because he's a giant of a man, and it would be cool to have two giants, each last name Brown, holding down both tackle positions for the next ten years. I'd be fine with any of the three.


The interior is more of a concern. There are players such as Quenton Nelson, Braden Smith, Martez Ivey, Mason Cole, and Billy Price. I'm particularly intrigued by Ivey because he can come in and start at guard day one, while being groomed to potentially take over for Staley at LT when he inevitably retires in 2 or 3 years

I think right guard and center are the biggest immediate need areas. If Garnett could come back and hold down the right guard spot then that would be tremendous. Beyond that this appears to be a better overall draft for OL so they could definitely acquire a few more linemen, particularly a center there.

While replacing Staley will be a major task by next season, it is the interior that needs help. Hoyer had very few plays today where he could step up into the pocket. Kilgore is just barely adequate in pass protection but a major liability in run blocking. He just isn't strong enough or agile enough to do more than just try to hold his spot.

The guard we need to be looking for is more of the Guy McIntyre mold, for older 49er fans - a guy who is strong and tough at the point of attack but more importantly is agile enough to get out in front of a screen pass or pull on an outside running play. Neither Tomlinson or Fusco have the requisite agility to move.

Kyle isn't going to change his offense. Hence, we need guards, and a center, who can move. The addition of Alex Mack to the Atlanta offense last season was as responsible for the success of that offense as much as anyone else on the team including JJ and Matt Ryan.

We need guys that can move. The scheme mandates it. Kyle wants to dial up stretch runs, pin-pull plays, bubble/tunnel screens, etc. The biggest conundrum moving forward is Trent Brown. I have no idea what the hell Kyle is going to do with Trent. As I pointed out in the TB thread, he is a cornerstone in pass pro but a liability in the run game. He has so much trouble executing reach blocks.

Jay Gruden's offense is very similar to Kyle's. Watch the Redskins tomorrow and you'll see what Kyle needs in his OL. Those guys on the WAS OL can scoot in space.

Agree.

Watch Trent Williams move in space. He is one of the top 3 run blockers in the league. Morgan Moses on the opposite side is also near the top in move/run blocking. At guard, Scherf is weak in pass pro but also very good on the run side. Center is their weak spot and it has cost Cousins at time as the pocket gets collapsed on him.
