49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I don't blame Shanahan if he's pissed. He went all in on Williams because he loved what he saw on the tape and Williams showed up and completely bombed.

This is going to be his next and final opportunity with the 49ers. Shanahan calling him out like that is to make sure this guy understands that he is going to be expected to get his s**t together or be gone.

If you're a grown ass man and you can't handle honest criticism coming from your coach out in the open, you need to be doing something else besides football. Williams in particular needs it, showing up out of shape to your rookie minicamp and getting outworked by an undrafted player after the team traded up for you? Dude needs some tough love.

Especially fans rooting for failure.

Nice post for your even 75K posts, PHX. Having read a good many of them congrats.
I like Shanny's no B.S. approach. Much respect.
Yea, great, I hope you guys get your way and the whole team communicates through the media. Hopefully Joe Williams clears the air and tells the media that he doesn't lack urgency, and that part of the problem was that the team put him on IR for a phantom ankle injury in order to stash him which didn't allow for him to contribute.

As long as you treat guys all the same, players don't have an issue with it. I think guys definitely would far rather have a coach who tells it like it is than some weasel who talks out of both sides of his mouth.

I bet Shanny read that tweet Williams posted after McKinnon was signed lol.

Honest evaluation is vital. Being nice and never pointing out the obvious is never successful in the long run. Over the past couple of decades we have seen the extremes, now it's time for some intelligent coaching.

Extremes:
Nolan--making fun of injured OL by rolling on the ground and crying in mockery.
Harbaugh--everyone is wonderful! Great! Just great!

Shanahan--just the facts mam.

Yes, I don't care for guys who are jerks but Shanahan seems to be far from a jerk. And even a jerk is OK if he's a good coach!

Yeah as long as he says the same thing to their face.

The worst is a coach who tells you fairy tales, then trashes you in the media.

The coach calling out a guy doesn't entail the whole team communicating through the media. Many other coaches have done the exact same. If a guy is butthurt about a coach stating the facts when being interviewed then that guy better find a new line of work. I'm sure Shanahan has told Williams far worse in private.

Bruce Arians bragged about how he dubbed DJ Humphries "Knee Deep" because he felt a foot to the ass wasn't nearly enough.

The guy got crapped on all the time from the coaching staff because they thought he was soft and last season he was playing like one of the better tackles in the league before he got injured. Some guys just need that tough love and constant reinforcement to keep them on their toes.

I'm checking the twitter and this whole joe williams/kyle shanahan feud is blowing up. You are so right, now current players are tweeting about how ridiculous shanahans comments were.

oh wait no, no one is talking about this

I guess we're lucky that Williams has decided to be the bigger man and not air the team's dirty laundry in the media. Hopefully Shanahan learns from him instead of trying to deflect the blame for Williams no show last season through the media.

The bigger man? The dude could probably start with showing up in shape for a change. That would be a start. Shanahan isn't on the hot seat. Williams is. He can be upset and get flushed out this offseason or he can use it as added motivation and go claim his spot on the roster.

Shanahan just seems like a matter-of-fact kind of guy. On one hand, he's a genius when it comes to X's and O's, but on the other hand... he grew up in this industry. He's seen what it takes to win... he's been in some bad situations... he's got a partnership with John Lynch that I think is very positive. I think he's grounded and knows what he needs to do to not only succeed, but for it to be a healthy experience for the team.

What is the team's dirty laundry? Please do tell
