Yea, I'm sure the players love Shanahan calling them out to the media.

Honest evaluation is vital. Being nice and never pointing out the obvious is never successful in the long run. Over the past couple of decades we have seen the extremes, now it's time for some intelligent coaching.

Extremes:
Nolan--making fun of injured OL by rolling on the ground and crying in mockery.
Harbaugh--everyone is wonderful! Great! Just great!

Shanahan--just the facts mam.

He can honestly evaluate the players internally and meet with them without telling the press about what was said in those evaluations.

Have to laugh when I recall some of Walsh's public comments about players...even Hall of Fame guys like Montana and Rice. Being honest is not bad unless it's personal and petty...which is not what Shanahan has been. Motivation comes from knowing how you stand and knowing what you need to do to improve. That can come from closed door meetings, one on one, or press conferences.

Yah its pretty bush league.

He can do whatever the hell he wants. He's the coach, not some random posters on a message board. Talk about bush league

The only time it's bush league is when they say one thing to your face, then another to the media. Don't most people just prefer anyone who is honest? It's also not like he's phrasing it terribly. When you phrase things in a way where it's, "he needs to get better in some areas and we believe he can" it's a whole lot different than, "he's really performing poorly and we don't see a future there".

Just a guess but I think Kyle lets his true feelings show when it comes to Joe Williams because he was the one who stuck his neck out for drafting the guy. Generally, I would prefer a little less of that kinda talk with the media though. Shanny is a young coach and I expect him to learn and evolve as he gets more experience with this type of stuff.

Montana and Clark thought they would be cut each and every TC. They used it for motivation as most good players do. Walsh would point out every mistake they made and talk to the media about what players need to do to improve. That isn't throwing a player under the bus, it's being open and honest. If they mocked the player or said something that was personal, or untrue, it would be a problem.

Some coaches who have been brutally honest other than Walsh? Belichick, Shula, Lombardi...just not an issue and the better the coach the more likely they are open and honest about players. Coaches who are overly concerned with players feeling tend to be gone quickly.

Let's add to "Extremes:" and not forget

Singletary dropping is draws.
So its ok for Jed to call out Foster but not ok for Kyle to say Joe Williams needs to improve?

Lol, no. It's the pros. If you don't like honesty, you're probably not going to be around for long.

I don't think anyone is saying they shouldn't be honest to the players about where they stand. I just don't think there's any benefit to going to the media to call a player out for lacking urgency. He can call him lazy to his face all day long if he wants, but why go and tell everyone about it.

Because he is the coach and if he wants to do that, then that is his prerogative. If he feels like this is the best way to address his player, so be it.

Bruce Arians would rip his players in the media all the time and his guys absolutely adored him. Nobody but fans gets their undergarments in a knot over it.

If you're a grown ass man and you can't handle honest criticism coming from your coach out in the open, you need to be doing something else besides football. Williams in particular needs it, showing up out of shape to your rookie minicamp and getting outworked by an undrafted player after the team traded up for you? Dude needs some tough love.

I don't know that there is any benefit, but I don't think it's a big deal either. Bruce Arians was notorious for doing that in AZ, and because he would tell them the same thing in person, players seemed to be ok with it.

Exactly. At this point in their careers, Shanahan has all the leverage to have this conversation however he feels necessary. Joe Williams has a lot more to prove he deserves to be in the NFL.
