49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

Okay so Shanahan has made lemonade out of lemons some of his years here.

Yes, he and Lynch have been successful short of a couple Super Bowl loses.

With that said everyone has a blind spot. A couple that are noticeable are 1) quitting on the running game when taking leads or in the second halfs 2) sucking at drafting WRs.

I think he can have a co-offensive coordinator that reminds him to keep running it and also just going and trading or signing proven WRs in the NFL like they did with Evans.

I agree with him not knowing how to close games out with a lead.

I would not say he's been terrible at drafting wrs, ayuik, pearsall, stribling, jennings all decent. I'm not sure what their hit percentage (25%?) which is probably worse than average but not terrible.

I thought we had a really good chance to win a sb this year. I did lose a lot of faith seeing yesterdays game though.

The coaching had a huge impact on them almost losing.

It's hard to understand trying to pass more when you lose more receivers and with a lead...

Sometimes you call plays to attack weaknesses you're seeing in the game and it just doesn't work. Players still have to execute, and sometimes the other team makes plays. It's easy to attack the end result without bothering to question what led up to the decision to call said play in the first place.

No coach is perfect and makes the perfect call every time. The other coaches in the NFL are good, too. That being said, Kyle Shanahan has more than earned the benefit of the doubt for why he does what he does and calls the plays he does. That's not to say he is always making the correct decision, but unless you are watching the game through the lens of the coach, have studied the other team's tendencies/formations as well as what they are doing in the game, or understanding WHY he called what he called, it's all revisionist history.

That's not true at all tho.

The running thing isn't worth the discussion right now because you can argue running yesterday hurt us in our ability to pick up first downs which would've ended the game on offense vs having to make another defensive stand.

Second and bolded part is definitely not true. The only real non injury failures were Pettis who wasn't a talent issue. They learned from that and haven't drafted guys who aren't all in or have that dog mentality. And Danny Gray who imo was drafted as a deep threat guy with Lance. I don't think we draft him without Lance being the pick.

Deebo, Aiyuk were great picks. The issues with Aiyuk don't change that he was an excellent WR. Stribling is pending. Pearsall showed he was a really good WR just had the injury that lingered in a brutal way.

If you're expecting studs outside the first 3 rounds that's high expectations and unfair since most of those guys tend to fail.

From the post round 3 guys we had Trent Taylor, Richie James, Jauan Jennings, Ronnie Bell, Cowing and Watkins. Don't even count Bergen cuz he was essentially a punt returner pick. Cowing is the earliest guy on that list.

He has an OC. He also has an run game coordinator.

Kyle is a great coach. But that has been a weakness. The question is what causes it.

well said. Football is nuanced and us fans have no clue what it's like to be on the sidelines calling plays.

I think it has to do with the preferences of OL. Which is also why i think they are so good at the QB sneak.
Going for quicker "lighter" guys.
When the defense goes 5 man front and 8 in the box i don't think they can move their guy, and then the 2nd and 3rd layer are selling out to blow up the run.

Again all that is understood.

But again all of us and that includes coaches at every level have a blind spot.

It's not revisionist but more documented that his tendency going back to the Falcon Super Bowl is to give up on the run.

Now, is he a good coach. Certainly.

Disagree.

First bolded: You don't give up on the run ever. Even if you're only gaining 2 or 3 yards. Often teams that mount big comebacks keep defenses honest by running it some. And, that's really what you want. Keep a defense honest and not just have them pin their ears back and bullrush the offensive line and QB.

Second bolded: Yes, they've drafted decent guys but have not developed a true elite #1. Like say for example Rams Kupp, Puka. Smith-Njigba 20th, Watson #34, Tee Higgins #33, heck Terrell Owens #89 etc.

Now there are different circumstances. But, going forward I'd like to see them go trade or sign a top WR and go from there. Mike Evans should be the trend setter.

Exactly so then what's the problem!

Do they all see it the same or someone overrule the others.
