49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I think the reason I tune in to Grant Cohn and follow a lot of his content is because he preaches the truth. He likes Kyle a lot and is a huge Niner fan but there was something off about the reporting of his accident and account that actually took place on that road. There's always an "at fault" driver in these situations or insurance companies wouldn't exist. I'm sure Kyle is taking care of all of her expenses out of pocket but there's still a record of accountability. Palo Alto Police department might need to take a look at integrity within their own department.

I am relieved to hear this. I had always wondered why. Now I can rest assured.

Well, I for one don't really care who was at fault I'm just glad that everyone was relatively okay, I think it should suffice Kyle is a really standup guy. And if he's getting shat all over from anyone for being the cause of the accident, I don't know what to tell you I guess that person has no life.

Has anyone ever read the book Extreme Ownership? I feel like this is straight out of the book. Something bad happened so instead of blaming anyone else you take ownership and accept responsibility. From what I've seen the person from the other car was a 21 year old female so an accident like this would impact her far more than the HC of the 49ers who has strong ties to the community. I feel like what actually happened was he was on his phone while his self driving Tesla was driving and the young women for whatever reason veered into his lane and hit him. He's taking ownership because that's what a leader does. I have mad respect for that while at the same time feeling bad for everyone involved. Even though everyone survived I feel like something like that will last forever

And set up what ever you need to set up, so you don't have to reach for it. Bluetooth app what ever. If it does drop and you need it right away, you pull over and park for a quick second. *GASP* the thought of that.

Why the hostility? I know Cohn (justly) gets a lot of criticism for playing the gadfly/public conscience role to the point of trolling, and I agree - he likes to be "controversial", it's his thing, and it gets tiresome when there's hardly any controversy to push. But I thought that here he was not just fair, he also wrote a good piece from every perspective.

Kawakami used to also get a lot of hate here (before he became inaccessible to many as he mostly writes behind paywalls for years now) for being critical of the team, but I consider him one of the better reporters out there, and a rather fine writer actually.

As fans, and therefore by default supporting the team in everything, we often lose track what makes good reporting. Cohn annoys me, not only for his borderline trolling, but mostly because when he wants (like here) he can be a good journalist and a good writer. His default shock style is a waste of talent.

Dropping and picking up are 2 different things.

you teach your kids not to pick it up so you don't get hit head on .

Afrikan has no faults and has never done anything foolish.

It was foolish of Kyle to take his eyes off the road, but the vitriol is a bit much. People are flawed and make dumb choices sometimes. Shocking, I know. I suspect he'll be a more focused driver going forward.

Now as far as the accident goes, I find the story totally believable. I once crashed in an intersection while starting off from a light that turned green. The other guy ran the orange signal because he wanted to avoid being stuck behind the red. He was both breaking the speed limit (not by much) and running the yellow, so he was found at fault, but I could have easily avoided him by slamming the brakes had I seen him. Only I didn't - I was desperately groping for my phone that had slid off my rather sharply cut right pocket and about to fall between the seat and the gear shift. Eyes off the road for 2 seconds while doing a little more than 5 mph- crash.

It's so easy to overrate your ability to do two things simultaneously while driving, especially on low speeds and on routes you've driven a million times before. In general, it's the routine drives that are the most dangerous. On another occasion, I almost drove off a high speed highway because I literally fell asleep on the wheel for 2 seconds. My wife was alert and shouted to me and I corrected, so no harm done (though I still get nightmares). Why? Because it's a stretch I've done tens of times, over the course of 20 years. I'm a seasoned long distance driver, having criss-crossed Europe from one end to the other on several occasions. So, I overrated myself. It had been a hectic day, with lots of chores done in a busy city in a very hot day, before I started out for that "easy" 3 hour drive that I had done a million times with no hitches since I was a young man. As a man in my fifties though, it proved too much for my brain which decided to go for a nap. Thank god my wife was alert or I wouldn't be here telling you all this.

Bottom line: I can totally see what Shanahan describes having happened exactly as he says. And good on him on insisting the poor woman on the other side was not to blame.
