Speaking of getting back on topic to Kyle, I was recommended a video on Instagram with some guy at Levi's stadium asking 49ers' fans who they thought was the greatest 49ers head coach ever. I was shocked at how many of them said Kyle Shanahan.
It made me wonder: are these just casuals or bandwagon fans? Or are we really at the point in time where the majority of 49ers' fans don't know who Bill Walsh is because it was so long ago? I wasn't alive for Bill Walsh, but I sure as hell knew who he was my entire life. There's either a gaping generational gap or widespread amnesia amongst the 49ers' fan base.
I think there is starting to be an age gap thing going on..that and/or beer may have been a factor. But everyone should say Walsh. Kyle's script isn't done yet but nobody compares to Bill. I was fortunate enough to be alive when he was coach and watched them win it all against the Bengals in 1989 and that final drive with Joe was something else to see live. It was magical.
Walsh and Joe made me fall in love with football. They were amazing. Saw 49ers win it all again against Denver the next yr when Elway showed up high-or something- lol and couldn't play ball for his life.
Kyle, I hope he gets a ring or two for us, eventually. Not the best coach ever though.
Idk if I would have been a 49er fan if it wasn't for Joe and Walsh, I mean, maybe I would have liked them but they really drew me in. And along with Rice, Craig, etc..it was like being spoiled with the best.
Yeah, same.
Definitely Walsh. He changerd the culture. He brought innovation to the offense that took several years for the league to catch up to. He was a terrific in game play caller. He seemed to know just when to dial up a play. He had a way of keeping players loose but he also demanded the best from them. He had every quality you need in a HC.
I also have to mention Red Hickey. The Niners weren't a powerhouse under him but he developed the ally oop pass and the shotgun offense. Both were used effectively to beat superior teams. Very innovative in his time.
