Speaking of getting back on topic to Kyle, I was recommended a video on Instagram with some guy at Levi's stadium asking 49ers' fans who they thought was the greatest 49ers head coach ever. I was shocked at how many of them said Kyle Shanahan.

It made me wonder: are these just casuals or bandwagon fans? Or are we really at the point in time where the majority of 49ers' fans don't know who Bill Walsh is because it was so long ago? I wasn't alive for Bill Walsh, but I sure as hell knew who he was my entire life. There's either a gaping generational gap or widespread amnesia amongst the 49ers' fan base.

I think there is starting to be an age gap thing going on..that and/or beer may have been a factor. But everyone should say Walsh. Kyle's script isn't done yet but nobody compares to Bill. I was fortunate enough to be alive when he was coach and watched them win it all against the Bengals in 1989 and that final drive with Joe was something else to see live. It was magical.

Walsh and Joe made me fall in love with football. They were amazing. Saw 49ers win it all again against Denver the next yr when Elway showed up high-or something- lol and couldn't play ball for his life.

Kyle, I hope he gets a ring or two for us, eventually. Not the best coach ever though.

Idk if I would have been a 49er fan if it wasn't for Joe and Walsh, I mean, maybe I would have liked them but they really drew me in. And along with Rice, Craig, etc..it was like being spoiled with the best.

Yeah, same.

Definitely Walsh. He changerd the culture. He brought innovation to the offense that took several years for the league to catch up to. He was a terrific in game play caller. He seemed to know just when to dial up a play. He had a way of keeping players loose but he also demanded the best from them. He had every quality you need in a HC.

I also have to mention Red Hickey. The Niners weren't a powerhouse under him but he developed the ally oop pass and the shotgun offense. Both were used effectively to beat superior teams. Very innovative in his time.

Fan base going to games has changed since they moved the team to Santa Clara.

A lot of older Niner fans that held tickets since the 50s and early 60s just decided that they didn't want to go to games anymore or they couldn't afford the seat licenses.

Bill Walsh is the most influential HC of the last 50 years....and probably is a top 5 HC all time. As much as I respect Shanahan and feel fortunate that he's the Niner HC, anybody putting Shanahan ahead of Walsh cannot really be taken seriously. They are either 10 years old, related to the Shanahans, or simply don't know the sport.

In the end, those of us pointing this stuff out turned out to be right.

The only gif I have left remaining from that year since most got deleted. BA literally pouting because he wasn't the one to score the touchdown. The entire season was filled with moments like this. The problem is most of it happens off the broadcast few, so the average fan that isn't watching the all-22 has no clue about it.

Hard disagree that this is complaining about not getting the football.

I want WRs to want the football. He has never complained about stuff on the sidelines or in the media. That means more to me than in the moment a WR showing emotion that the ball didn't go his way.

Anyone trying to pretend these were signs that he was going to quit on the team after getting a huge new deal isn't being genuine.
And yes Bill Walsh is easily the best HC, arguably ever.

I think Kyle is a great coach but until he wins a SB he shouldn't even be in the conversation with Walsh.
Oh cmon I'm a fan of Shanahan but Walsh is the clear cut GOAT. I don't know how that is a question. Let's not be like those uneducated Seattle fans who know nothing of their team pre 2012.

Walsh is the GOAT, Siefert is #2 and Kyle is #3. If he can get just 1 ring with us then he leap frogs Siefert IMO

If Walsh never won a SB should he be thought as just another coach?

This.

Sigh, I wonder if we will ever have a run closer to that again. This is why I was so bummed out with these SB losses, never know when we will be back. Over thirty years, can Shanny just get one already?

My post wasn't going for the "better than" it was talking about the simple fact that right now it's not even close and I'm obviously a Kyle fan.

However it's VERY difficult to have a dynasty these days. Only teams who have done it in the salary cap era were Pats and Chiefs.

Two things they had in common? ELITE QB and a great HC. Pats had the perfect combo of elite QB and elite defensive mind but the Chiefs have been incredibly lucky to have Spags around to give them that along with Mahomes and Reid on offense.

I firmly believe if Shanahan had Saleh or Ryans in 2023 we get that SB win even if Dre gets injured. And if we had Purdy(who while great isn't anywhere near Brady/Mahomes level) then we win in 2019 as well.

So to me I don't know if Kyle has to win 3 to qualify to be there with Bill. Salary cap makes it a very different ball game. As I've said before technically if Kyle played with rules Bill had then he already has 1 SB win at minimum.

But all that is a moot point until he wins at least 1.
Hmm not sure why Brock is "not anywhere near Mahomes or Brady level." We don't know that yet imo.
