I'd also like to see how he handles a big rebuild, which is kind of in the works. Part of reason why I think Sean McVay is a good amount ahead of him is that even without the hardware, the Rams handled the rebuild very well and quickly got good young players in the draft. Donald is gone, they have a really good cheap dline. Rams have a lot of draft capital next year to get a new QB and transition after Stafford too.
A lot of older coaches can't rebuild like that. Belichik couldnt after Brady left. A lot of guys who are HCs for a long time have a hard time changing their ways and adapting/adjusting to new generation of players who think and conduct themselves differently and might have different values, etc etc.
I feel like we're spinning our wheels here cuz we've had all these conversations before but IMO Kyle has addressed most of the mistakes that he likely identified as being the key reasons we lost pivotal games in the past.
We will see if he addresses the mistakes from last year when we get to this season.
2019/2020:
I believe the two seasons have to be combined since nobody expected us to get as far as we did in 2019 but I'd say the biggest F up that year was Jimmy G's play in the end and not using Raheem more.
We went into the 2020 season with Raheem as the unquestioned starter but he got injured in that damn NY game. Jimmy's injuries that season also affirmed Kyle's desire to find a replacement - which moved us to go all in on Trey Lance in the 2021 draft.
So mistake - not using Raheem enough. Fix - make him the unquestioned starter.
Mistake - Jimmy G can't get it done and can't stay healthy. Fix - draft Trey Lance
2021:
I believe Kyle felt our biggest issue was not being able to pickup the key 2nd and 1 situation in that game, on top of Tartt's INT drop.
Fix - We didn't bring Tartt back and drafted TDP clearly way too early because Kyle felt he was the type of back they could use to pick up those key short down situations.
2022:
I think Kyle felt the depth at QB was our major downfall(and he wasn't wrong)
Fix - Adding 2 vet QBs to be QB2 and QB3 after the competition for QB2 being won by Darnold.
2023:
Inability to beat man coverage vs KC in the SB and the RG
Fix: Draft Pearsall and Cowing and Puni, giving Aiyuk the extension he got.
2024: Remains to be seen. Certainly seems like they felt the run D was trash.
Now you can obviously question a bunch of these moves being major failures but I do believe Kyle is TRYING to fix what he believes are the key mistakes. His players have all talked about how he's willing to listen and he spoke about it on the Playcallers pod...as long as someone brings him why it makes sense he listens.
