Which was really dumb and reactionary. What hurt those teams most and what ultimately killed off the 49ers dynasty run was years of terrible drafting and bad free agent signings. They lost tons of depth that was never replaced and made bad moves that left the team weak or barren at key positions while continually pointing the finger at the coach, the quarterback or whatever other convenient scapegoat.

It's because Eddie held his coaches accountable. Whether it was justified is another debate. I'm sorry but to me constantly losing in the playoffs in not success. All it does is lower our draft position, make us bleed coaches, and pay out a hefty sum to a beefed up roster that is almost good enough.

Yep. Mahomes. Could have even had Brady but he decided to stick with Jimmy. For someone that is labeled an offensive genius, he sure doesn't have the ability to assess offensive talent. Could easily have won our second straight this year with Brady, and should have been winners of 3/4. instead, Mahomes has 2, and McVay has the other.

Yay Kyle…

Go watch some 2000s 49ers football, outside of 3 years with Harbs a bunch of f**king trash…that's worth crying about.

Go watch some 1980-1990s football. Outside of a few years pure dominance. Comparing this to that, there's a lot to cry about.

Yeah, our current 4 year run is like 1990 - 1993, except those squads never made a Super Bowl and lost the NFCCG twice at home. Should Seifert be burned at the stake?

Oddly enough, some fans did have that line of thinking.

He was burned for it, despite winning the SB in 94.

Im saying with some of these fans, he never makes it to the 1994 season.

Agreed. The drafting WAS AWFUL. Between 1988 and 1996 I think we had one good draft (1994). I don't mean finding a good player here and there, but actual drafts. The organization just cannibalized itself.

If McVay had another losing season in 2023 would you fire him?

I'm not the one who's constantly bringing him up in another coach's thread. I think Reid is amazing, he was also the poster child for choking HCs for 20 years.

He had to be given one of the most talented QBs ever to get over the hump. Explain to me what Reid had to do with Mahomes scrambling for 30 yards or a punt return for 65 yards? Or a BS PI call? Sometimes it's just players making a play and he happens to have one of the best.

im also not saying Reid is bad ass coach. He's a HOFer….It's ridiculous how fans interpret head coaches and what they think is good or bad.

Admittedly I am not following every post and this thread flies, but who is bringing him up? You brought him up the other day when I say KS needs to learn to win it all. I guess I understand the comparisons, at least earlier in their HC careers, but imo its rude to Reid to compare Kyle to him.

You also contradicted yourself....We cant say anything negative about Kyle otherwise I am assumed I hate him and he needs to be fired. I'm stupid because he's an amazing coach blah blah blah. Yet you are knocking Reid every chance you get, then turn around and call him a HoF coach? I fell like you are not applying the same standards to both of them. Usually we agree on 99% of topics, but I've noticed you can be very condescending to posters who disagree with you.

I know! Second half adjustments exposed the Eagles d via simplicity as 9moon stated. Reid is a fantastic coach and has a great staff and roster.

I love how he didn't draft Mahomes, as if he has not been the one coaching him since the day he's been drafted. Its a silly take.

This is a sign of an ungrateful fan. One who doesn't appreciate how good we actually have it and doesn't deserve to celebrate with the rest of us when we do finally win the SB with Shanahan.

Its because Eddie was a hothead that was fortunate enough that Walsh didn't end up with the Rams. His willingness to spend big money was a crucial factor in the team winning but him being an ass is also a major reason for Walsh was burned out and stepped away from the NFL altogether.

Maybe out drafts wouldn't have sucked if we had Walsh. Seifert would've taken that Cleveland job and Ray Rhodes is our DC.

Bad drafts, bad free agent signings, just a lot of dumb moves while picking up the occasionally great player from time to time(BY/TO). Looking back at those rosters, they had plenty of star power but little depth to sustain themselves and lack of talent at key positions, they whiffed in the draft so they kept trying to bring in band-aids via free agency, guys that disappointed more often than not.

Just looking back at the 1990 draft, they went Dexter Carter in the first round, just a few picks later they could have had Keith Sims, a reliable Pro Bowl level guard that would be a longtime NFL starter. With their first 2nd rounder, they chose Dennis Brown when they still needed help in the secondary, just one pick later, the Packers took LeRoy Butler, a future HOF safety. In the 3rd round they ended up with Ronald Lewis, a WR that would play for the team for just two years while a dozen picks or so later the Seahawks ended up with Curt Warner who would rush for 8,000 yards. In the 4th round they took Dean Caliguire at center, he played in two games for the 49ers. Twenty picks later, Tampa took 3 time Pro Bowl center Tony Mayberry.

You can look at every year from there to 1998 and see massive whiffs, especially at positions of need. It was inevitable that they were going to collapse because the talent was not being replaced.

This is not what we have. We're a team of "almost Super", and it seems the general fan base is content with that. I'm not…

I was watching the same game brah. Nowhere did I say Reid stunk or isn't an amazing play caller. He had some great calls in the RZ. I'm saying the difference was a couple plays that really had nothing to do with play calling.

the whole halftime adjustment stuff is always over dramatic with fans. Sure you can make some small adjustments…but there simply isn't time (at halftime) to make all these adjustments. I recommend reading Barrows article where he got to go into the locker room and see what really goes down at halftime.

End of the day Reid has the Micheal Jordan of football.

From a locker room/player perspective. Sure. They aren't making halftime adjustments. But to pretend like coaches are not making halftime adjustments based on what the other team was showing in the 1st half is just naive. There is no way to know for sure how the defense is going to play the offense at the start of the game. Coaches like Reid and Kyle run the scripted plays in order to see how the defense is going to defend them and then they adjust according to that. That is what makes them so good at what they do. Honestly, it should come to no surprise why our games are usually closer in the 1st half and then we tend to pull away in the 2nd half. Its not just by chance.

It doesn't matter. Know why, cause jed is like a lot of fans here. Jed is happy that his team is simply relevant. The 49ers are competitive and that puts tons of money in Jed's pocket. He doesn't give a S if they win the Super Bowl. Shannahan isn't going anywhere.

well maybe you should find a new team then because Kyle isn't going anywhere and there is no use of you sticking around and being miserable and insufferable about it.

Have they made their stance on coaches like Reid and Cowher? Damn near took them both 20 years to win a SB. Should they have been given up on?

So did Doug Pederson. Would you fire Sean McVay if he had another losing season in 2023?

No, the fanbase would rather win. But they aren't being irrational about it.

So how about McVay if he has another losing season? Or Bill Cowher? Would you have given him the ax in 1998? Just trying to figure out where the line is.

I would hope not.

I would hate for us to end up with another chip Kelly/JT situation all over again.

Our time will come once we get more consistency from the QB position.
