Jimmy is a game manager and not some elite passer who can extend and create. He's got to play within structure of the scheme and if any of that breaks down, more often than not SF is screwed on that play. Is what it is. Nothing changed with JG. It's a rollercoaster ride good and bad.
NY, we see this a lot…ie that Jimmy has to play within structure and scheme, and if he gets out of that mold, then the 9ers are screwed. But go back to his first season here, he shows up mid season, and then runs off 5 straight Ws, not knowing the playbook all that well and definitely NOT playing within Kyle's "structured" game plan. JG basically just winged it that first half season. Not saying he played "firehouse football" which is totally unstructured, but he did play a game that wasn't anywhere near as structured as kyle ended up having him play.
Then, once he seemed to be playing within Kyle's structure following year, he seemed to play less well than he had his first season when "unstructured" . His quality of play after yr 1 here, fell off…or at least it seemed that way to me. I liked his style of play better his first yr, when he wasn't following kyle's script. It seemed as if when playing Kyle's scheme, he was more robotic, and a lesser Qb.
So the question: was JG a better Qb playing less structured, or is the consensus that JG has to play "structured" football for us to win? Think back to those first 5 games.
